Muddy, ark brown colour. Huge off-white/green-ish head. What a beauty to look at! Loads of hops in the aroma, well accompanied with a light roasty, also bit smokey touch. And YES, the flavour is hugely hoppy with a roasted character that goes VERY well with the residual malt-sweetness. There is chocolate and hints of smoke, sweetish licorice. Long long flavour. Ultra-chewy mouthfeel. The winner of this mornings lineup of 3 Mikkeller beers.

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Mar 18, 2006 Very dark brown (almost black) colored beer with a small bubbly beige head that is fast disappearing. Aroma is complex, burned, black caramel sweet, flowery, sweet spicey and has touches of a fruitcake that has been far to long in a hot oven. The sweetness in the aroma is of a nice malty caracter. It works wonderwell with the refreshing herbalness of the hops and the fine bitters of the roasted malts. The taste is very original and has a good balance. The sweetness of the malt extraction is giving this brew a ferm backbone that can carey the powerfull roasted body along with the very complex hints of violets, soft asian spices, burned edges of sugar bread, german schartzbröt with a thick layer of pear jam (sirop de Liège). The afthertaste is burned sweet, has a fine and well integrated bitterness of hops. It also has touches of stuffed and caramelized fruits and ends with a rich mild malty sweetness with a flair of heavey roasted nuts. Again a very original brew from the Mikkeller Brewery. Great job Guys ! toccata (70), grembergen, Belgium
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 2/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Mar 21, 2006 Deep dark brown with almost no foam. In the beginning of the pour, big bubbles are formed, they are disappearing fast. The smell is complex. It has touches of drop, tar, black caramel, sweet plum cake, lots of spices they put in desserts, malts, dry fruits (figgs) and flowersents of hops. The taste is very interesting. It is slight sweet, earthy, has some coffee like hints, touches of fruit, thea, wood and a good untherbuild bitterness of hops. Finale is full of great tastes. henrikb (1303), Aarhus, Denmark
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 31, 2006 Dark brown body with red shine, huge small bubbled light brown head, leaving a very nice work of laces on its way down and stays beautifully small all the way through; Huge complex nose, that could be a little deeper, but unfold with time in the glass (it really need time in the glass to truly unfold and all its qualities), it has a very nice sweetness to it and lots of roasted malt. The first thing that jumps out is English Christmas Cake, with its burnt character combined with the bitter dried fruit, mostly raisins and sultanas, very nice nose that also has a little old pine needles to it; Huge carbonation on a balanced neutral body that lacks a bit of complexity; It finishes of very long and very balanced, with a little salty bitterness, the aroma is very mellow which gives it an appearance of fading to fast, it has loads of super chocolate (+70%) in it with its aroma and bitterness, but also a little cold acidy African coffee. Brew some more!!! Belgo (145), Køge, Denmark
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Mar 31, 2006 Bottle; pours very dark brown with thin head that dissolves quickly. The aromas are made of citrusy American hops, dried fruit (figs and raisins), toffee and some chocolate. On the palate it’s mediumbodied with a fine balance between the very present sweetness and the bitterness. As always in a Mikkeller brew you DO notice the bitterness, but much less so than the IBU value would indicate, which is definetely due to the residual sugars.
The taste is primarily a nice - not over the top - caramel flavour with coffee notes and of course, plenty of hops.
What can I say? They’ve done it again....

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 21, 2006 Bomber from Engelsmann, shared with SuIIy on 5/21/06. Best Before February 2007. Very deep chestnut tinges in a dark mahogany body, well-settled out, but showing low filtration and natural carbonation. Light butter-tan head is large, consisting of medium-large bubbles. Strong retention, minimal lacing. The nose is actually quite reserved. Soily, earthy floor malts with walnuts, pumpernickel and light anise-tinged hops that are herbal-nutty and tastefully done. The hops tease the palate, as soft, dry brown sugar notes and minor cola hints flitter about. A prominent sweetness begins to slowly build, but never does it become rich or overdone. Light cream, honey and dry cocoa notes finish out the beer as a touch of the earthiness makes a come-back. Flavor is unique, to say the least. The aroma was somewhat expected, but the flavor begins with dry leaves, mixed about by nutty yeast and dry cola notes. Quickly, some light anise and dry chocolate graham crackers enter the mix, continuing the dry trend. But a note of deeply citric, but not overly flavorful hops drives right down to the back of the palate. It’s one of the strangest hop notes I’ve tasted. Being neither acidic nor in-your-face, I guess I would best describe it as subtle grapefruit rind notes. The sweetness quickly follows, though by no means would I call this a sweet beer. Rather, the attenuation is high, leading to a drinkability and medium body, which, when bolstered by the fairly tight carbonation, gives you something along the lines of a Southern English Brown (with American hops). Roastiness is minimal as well, though it is there, just more deeply integrated with the crunchy earthy/soily/nutty dry malts. No alcohol whatsoever. I get some retronasal, light coffee notes, almost hazelnut-like.
