Sadly, this is my first barleywine so I’m attracted to the novelty. Very strong caramel/cookie scents and a hint of tropical fruit (pineapple?), but it’s also tainted by the smell of rotted bread or old socks. Very malty, the burnt molasses tastes masks the booze okay. Somewhat syrupy and flat.

2005 vintage. Red copper ale with no head. Sweet caramel and raisin in aroma. Dry malts in mouth, with light caramel notes, raisins, and pleasant floral hops. Smooth alcohol warmth. Nice canadian BW. Enjoyed at YEHa!05 Christmas Party on Dec. 17th, 2005.

Clear amber pour with no head. Aroma of hops, caramel and alcohol. Flavor of hops, caramel and alcohol. The body is light with a liquorous texture and low carbonation. Not really exciting for a barley wine.

341 ml bottle. Golden colour with a thin off-white head. Caramel and earthy aroma. Caramel malt flavours with a nutty and earthy bitter finish. Full bodied, smooth. Hop accented, but mellowed and alcohol well hidden.

Tasted in Toronto. Obtained from LCBO. 341 ml stubby #4004 - includes sturdy little barley wine glass. Pours a deep copper red colour, no head, clear. The aroma is very stronge - has alcohol components, raisin / plum, figs and caramel. The flavour is very rich in malt and caramel, a very subtle bitter hoppiness in the background, but dominated be sweet caramel and warming alcohol.

An orange beer with a small white head. The aroma is sweet malty, while the flavor is more complex with notes of alcohol and malt, as well as a slight touch of hops - just enough to give it a dry hoppy end. The alcohol gives a slight burn.

Bottle # 557 courtesy of the venerable Dougshoemaker! Hazy brown pour, with a thin white head.Aromas are strong fruit, vanilla extract, oak, and alcohol. Strong alcohol and prune flavours. Lots of boozey vanilla and wood. Good. Strong warming alcohol finish, medium to full body. Definitely a sipper. Thanks again Doug for this rare treat!
