Had stubby bottle #6189: Poured a hazy, dark copper color with thin, quickly receding off-white head, nice lacing. Chocolatey with strong alcohol aroma right after uncapping. Flavor is similar to aroma with the exception of barley flavor taking over in the aftertaste and hints of toffee and caramelized malt. These flavors became very intense as the beverage warmed. Rich, velvety palate with alcohol bite throughout. This is my first time drinking a barley wine... This drink strikes me as being in a class all its own, even though it’s basically just extra strong beer.

From a stubby 341 ml. capped bottled, 2005 vintage, number 2106. Poured a light caramel, fresh, raw apple cider brown with a fizzy, bubbly head that quickly settled into fine lacing. Aromas of caramel toffee apples, honey vanilla, caramelized sugar, a subtle citrus and whiffs of solvent-like alcohol. Good even carbonation and a crisp, sipping smooth medium-light bodied mouthfeel. A pleasant tasting sipper, caramel, toffee, a light vanilla, a raisin fruitiness, a very light citrus flavor, a sugary taste that you get with some homemade, clear grain alcohol, the alcohol is warming in the throat, and a caramel toffee malty finish with a lingering alcohol flavor in the palate. A good barley wine in a unusually shaped bottle, I’m trying to remember, but I think years ago, when I was a really young, small child, my father use to drink Hamm’s and Old Style from bottles like this.

2005 bottle no. 2177. Pours a deep copper colour with almost no head. Aroma is sweet and powerfull, very malty with hints of cognac. Taste is sweet, but the 11% abv is relatively well hidden, hop comes mainly in the aftertaste. Very good overall.

Thanks to hopdog for sharing this 2005 bottle #6613. Pours a lightly hazy golden amber with an average foamy/bubbly off white head. Aroma of caramel, toffee, cardboard, sweet malts, touch of vanilla, toasty and some nuts. Flavor is smooth, sweet malts, caramel, light hops, nutty and toasty. Alcohol well hidden.

Stubby bottle acquired in trade with blankboy (thanks!). Bottle # 6613, vintage 2005. Poured a medium slightly hazy brownish color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of caramel, toffee, and light chocolate. Tastes of caramel, toffee, light chocolate, toasted nuts. Alcohol well hidden (never would have guessed 11%!). Smooth and easy to drink.

Bought a bottle of the 2005 from the brewpub before they sold out. light cloudy brown appearance. quickly-disappearing thin whitish head. loads of caramel and fruit on the head (including pineapple). quite sweet, but not cloying. alcohol is very well integrated. an excellent nightcap by the fireplace kind of beer.

Nice cloudy brown murky poor. No head. Aromas of Plums, oak wood, oats, alcohol and leather. Very creamy feel. I’m a huge fan of the SamiChlaus beer from Castle Eggenberg. This could be it the closest i’ve tasted to that beer... I’d say maybe its baby sister. A little more bitter. You can obviously feel the alcohol. A longlasting aftertaste of dark creamy caramel / toffee.
