Appearance: Ruby red, small off white head. Aroma: Malt, hoppy, quite roasty and some nuts. Flavour: Quite carbonated, nice burnt malt, sweet with a long dry finish.

Candied malt nose with some mild chocolate, deep copper, tiny tan head. Flavour is a malty caramel, and a touch nutty. Light bodied, pleasantly bitter, easy drinking, nutty, bitter has a woody aftertaste. Very good.

Draught at the Brewpub. This is reddish brown in the glass with a small head. There’s caramel, toffee, plenty of hops in the aroma. Mouthfeel is light to medium. I taste some dark fruits, floweriness in the hops with some mild bitterness, more caramel, bread, chocolate.

Draught at Mill St. Brewpub. Pours a very deep ruby-brown with a small diminishing frothy tan head. Aroma’s lightly roasty along with chocolate, a good amount of hops, some caramel and a hint of smoke. Flavour’s also roasty along with some chocolate, light green hops, light sweetness and a hint of smoke. I’m not loving the finish but it’s a minor thing. Average bodied. A well made, enjoyable Scotch Ale.

On tap from the MS pub: A deep brown ale with ruby highlights, smallish cap. Aroma is caramel sweet nutty malts, light wisp of smoke. Taste is on the sweet side with the caramel malts and nutty-woody tastes in the front then the back thins out and drops off quickly. Tasty, malty but a rather thin bodied less intense version of the style.

Growler from the brewpub, under the name Black Watch - pours very dark mahogany with a good thick slightly beige head. Bold, malty aroma - nutty, woody, smooth. Flavour packed with plum, hazelnut, molasses, peat, a touch of smoke, chocolate, and a metallic edge from the hops. Pretty full-bodied. I haven’t had too many Scotch ales, so I’m not sure how on style this is, but it was very good nonetheless. Grows on you as the growler empties and the beer gets a chance to warm up a bit...

Rating 10 for da beer. VERY nice malty package that is pale and fruity and fairly effervescent for the style - didn’t harm the presentation at all. I like the dark roasted malts that were added to give a bit of roast to this deep clear amber ale. Has a great feel, flavor is pretty satisfying, aroma is a bit shy but quality and highly drinkable overall. PERCENTILE ME!. (click.)

Amber-brown colour. Cereal, toffee, light peat and light fruit on the nose. Slghtly chewy, peaty and chocolatey palate with toffee and brown sugar accents. It’s a little bit watery in the finish, but also a little bit dry, which makes it more drinable but is slightly incongruous with the malty richness.
