Sweet prunes and dates, currants, and molasses. Roasted malt and crusty crisp finish belies the style but there is a hint of smokiness. Smooth, quaffable. Resinous sweet malts and fruits in palate just like aromas. Not a peaty scotch ale, rather sweet but not too sweet. Simple but enjoyable. HogTownHarry (4026), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Aug 28, 2008 Draught. At BeerBistro - 2008 Golden Tap Awards. Dry-hopped special edition. Cloudy brick coloured red-brown pour with an average frothy head. Tangy, medium-sweet roast malt aroma with a nice hint of chocolate toffee - there really is quite a lot of pungent green hops to this, I’m not sure it’s working well with that malt, but it’s lush. Taste - nope, the hopping is a mistake - no meshing at all between the dry herbal hop bitterness and the medium-roast sweet malt - the two sides turned their backs on one another on my palate and refused to interact. Average body, way too astringent for the style, and the sweet light malt body is totally overridden by fresh green hop acidity in the finish. I need to try the regular version, it’s probably quite pleasing. mabel (2626), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Jul 20, 2008 Very dark mahogany pour. Nice frothy head. Not much scent at all, a touch of malt maybe? Full bodied taste, lots of roasted malts, touch of caramel and hops, very well balanced. GregClow (2516), Toronto, Ontario, Canada
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jul 1, 2008 Draught at the brewpub. Deep mahogany with a small dirty-white head. Aroma is sweet but not cloying - roast malt, dark sugar, vanilla. Medium bodied. Flavour starts malty, with notes of coffee and chicory, and some moderate hoppiness coming in to dry things out a bit in the finish. Nice stuff, very drinkable. Sammy (4065), Toronto, Ontario, Canada
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jun 1, 2008 Updated: Mar 24, 2009On-tap at the brewpub. Mahogoney brown with reddish tinge, and some white head. Almost neutral aroma, malt, faint barley. Mouthfeel is above average, i am getting a little roasted malt, low bitterness, maltiness carries it. Unoffensive yet not overwhelmingly drinkable.
Had the black watch version a year later, and it would rate about the same, though looked and smelled better, and less roastiness. Radek Kliber (4000), Toronto (Can) Krotoszyn (Pol), Ontario, Canada

Appearance: deep, dark ruby, touch of mahogany. Slightly tanned , creamy head. Nose : Mild , yet not flat aroma. Warmth with caramel malts , bit of scotch. Gentle roasty notion ending session. 7+ Flavor/Palate : On lips slight citric bite , frontal clean roasted barley (well prepared). Some bitter bite in the midlle but not much. Scotch character slightly less exposed here if you compare to aroma. Dry, carbonated finish. Good ale.

(3+) Flavour is almost brown ale like with a dry toasty-roast malt character up front. Light metallic notes in the background grow as the glass goes on. Decent amount of bitterness throughout sneaks up on you, and grows throughout. Aroma is mild, touch of roasty-toasty malt as in the flavour, light metallic notes as well, touch nutty. (6+) Average plus bodied palate. (3+) Decent but a bit strange at times. 7/4/7/3+/14 - 3.4 On tap, Mill St. Brewpub, as Black Watch Scotch Ale
