Draught at Mill St. Brewpub. Pours a very deep ruby-brown with a small diminishing frothy tan head. Aroma’s lightly roasty along with chocolate, a good amount of hops, some caramel and a hint of smoke. Flavour’s also roasty along with some chocolate, light green hops, light sweetness and a hint of smoke. I’m not loving the finish but it’s a minor thing. Average bodied. A well made, enjoyable Scotch Ale.

Growler from the brewpub, under the name Black Watch - pours very dark mahogany with a good thick slightly beige head. Bold, malty aroma - nutty, woody, smooth. Flavour packed with plum, hazelnut, molasses, peat, a touch of smoke, chocolate, and a metallic edge from the hops. Pretty full-bodied. I haven’t had too many Scotch ales, so I’m not sure how on style this is, but it was very good nonetheless. Grows on you as the growler empties and the beer gets a chance to warm up a bit...

Rating 10 for da beer. VERY nice malty package that is pale and fruity and fairly effervescent for the style - didn’t harm the presentation at all. I like the dark roasted malts that were added to give a bit of roast to this deep clear amber ale. Has a great feel, flavor is pretty satisfying, aroma is a bit shy but quality and highly drinkable overall. PERCENTILE ME!. (click.)

Amber-brown colour. Cereal, toffee, light peat and light fruit on the nose. Slghtly chewy, peaty and chocolatey palate with toffee and brown sugar accents. It’s a little bit watery in the finish, but also a little bit dry, which makes it more drinable but is slightly incongruous with the malty richness.

Appearance: deep, dark ruby, touch of mahogany. Slightly tanned , creamy head.
Nose : Mild , yet not flat aroma. Warmth with caramel malts , bit of scotch. Gentle roasty notion ending session. 7+
Flavor/Palate : On lips slight citric bite , frontal clean roasted barley (well prepared). Some bitter bite in the midlle but not much. Scotch character slightly less exposed here if you compare to aroma. Dry, carbonated finish. Good ale.

Draught at the brewpub. Deep mahogany with a small dirty-white head. Aroma is sweet but not cloying - roast malt, dark sugar, vanilla. Medium bodied. Flavour starts malty, with notes of coffee and chicory, and some moderate hoppiness coming in to dry things out a bit in the finish. Nice stuff, very drinkable.

2009-03-25. very dark brown body with a smallish beige head. (3+) Flavour is almost brown ale like with a dry toasty-roast malt character up front. Light metallic notes in the background grow as the glass goes on. Decent amount of bitterness throughout sneaks up on you, and grows throughout. Aroma is mild, touch of roasty-toasty malt as in the flavour, light metallic notes as well, touch nutty. (6+) Average plus bodied palate. (3+) Decent but a bit strange at times. 7/4/7/3+/14 - 3.4 On tap, Mill St. Brewpub, as Black Watch Scotch Ale

2008-08-23. Dry hopped version. Hazy dark brown body, headless. Dry lightly alcoholic malt in the aroma. (6+) Flavour has similar dry malty character with a touch of alcohol. Average palate is under carbonated. 6/3/6/3/13 - 3.0 Cask, Golden Tap Awards, Toronto

2008-05-23.Ruby touched brown body with a nice creamy tan head and light lacing. Aroma is of mild, lightly earthy malt (6+) . Flavour has sweet malt base, roasty earthy finish lingers long into the finish and aftertaste. Palate is slightly fuller bodied than average. Decent. 6/4/7/3/14 - 3.4 On tap at Mill St.

On tap from the MS pub: A deep brown ale with ruby highlights, smallish cap. Aroma is caramel sweet nutty malts, light wisp of smoke. Taste is on the sweet side with the caramel malts and nutty-woody tastes in the front then the back thins out and drops off quickly. Tasty, malty but a rather thin bodied less intense version of the style.
