This is a solid ale, with a deep amber body and a really interesting character. Certainly there are some hops here, slightly on the tart side, but the nose gives way to a really interesting combo of wood, warm malt, and - believe it or not - Coke float! Nice one. The spices (pepper) are very apparent in the aroma and will awaken the senses for what’s to come. A spicy beer with a pepper aftertaste that disipates quickly in a forgiving manner. A good beer overall, but not quite my taste for an everyday beer. probstk (1067), Nepean, Ontario, Canada
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 30, 2006 App.: Pours med. amber with reddish hues, tan head with reddish hues (doesn’t last long). Aroma: Nice hit of hops to start, mainly citrusy, but some resin and pine. Dig a bit deeper and a few med. malt notes come through. Palate: Med. body and carbonation. Flav.: beautiful balance of malt and hops. A touch of sweetness to start and a touch of bitterness to finish. Lovely beer. I suspect I avoided this product, thinking it was the Stock Ale. Pity! jpm30 (1588), East Central, Georgia, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Nov 24, 2006 From a 355 ml. bottle with a blurb on the back, no freshness date.
Poured a clear reddish amber with a foamy head that settled into a thin lacing, minimal amount of laced sticking.
Aromas of caramel and cocoa, nutty and floral.
Good carbonation and a crisp, smooth medium-light bodied mouthfeel.
Tastes of caramel and powdery cocoa malts with a grainy metallic edge, a touch of nuttiness, floral and very lightly citric, and a dryish nutty, malty finish.
I could have used a little more hop flavor to balance the malts, not bad, easy drinkability, glad I had a chance to try it.
Acquired in a trade with Sammy, thanks!

Hops dance around with an almost chocolate sense. Very along the lines of a barley, but more on the malts. WEll balanced, complex, and roasted. yes! tomthompson89 (1494), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 15/20 | Oct 10, 2006 Aroma of caramelized malts. Dark copper-colored, slighlty effervescent body with thick, quickly dissipating foamy beige head. Complex flavor of roasted malts, hops and barley with wooden (oak maybe...) undertones and with lingering coppery aftertaste. Not as rich as expected, quite watery.
