An interesting aroma with caramel and nutmeg leading the way. Lot’s of flavours in the mouth, perhaps too many. Caramel, spices, citrus etc.
Finishes slightly bitter followed by a coffee/chocolate aftertaste. I could see this beer becoming an acquired taste but I think there’s too many other great ales out there to give this one too much time. KingofCastle (202), London, Ontario, Canada
| 2.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/20 | Aug 7, 2006 Updated: Aug 4, 2007bottle: The bottle reads that they use a staggering amount of hops and different malts to create a fiery, spicey pale ale. Well, it is spicy & has tonnes of flavour, but it is almost too hoppy and the malts don’t balance it out. Granted the IPA is hard to do right. I suggest the Wells IPA, way smootther & flavour that actually works together. This is complex all right but that doesn’t mean it is good. Feels bitter/sharp in the mouth and finishes that way too: flavours just don’t blend & I smell & taste something very distinct like citrus or pineapple which is way too strong. Reminds me of a true spice ale or a red/copper ale, but there are better ones out there. Way too much hype here. Part of the unfortunate micro-brew trend to combat blah-tasting macro brews with overly flavourful beers you can’t drink or just don’t bind into 1 smooth flavour.

Smell is hoppy and sweet, some notes of pine and grapefruit. Taste is also hoppy, goes down very smooth and easy to drink. Pretty good Candaian beer if you ask me. Dunno if its better than their porter, but its really good. Thanks man iambeer (255), Ontario, Canada

| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 5, 2006 Great dark golden-red colour. Flavour has a nice smokiness, with a very present but not overwhelming bitterness. Very full-bodied and satisfying. The best Canadian beer I’ve tried so far. Highly Recommended! caledonian (367), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jul 25, 2006 Rich amber color, decent head. Very hoppy with a solid roasted malt base. Warming and full feel. Not too much aftertaste. Would be a good autumn and winter beer. Eructoblaster (1508), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 22, 2006 Bottle. Limpid amber body with average carbonation and a good lasting off-white foamy head. Nice hoppy aroma with spicy and roasty notes. Its sharp hoppy taste ends with a long bitter finish. Very good! Commodore (112), Ontario, Canada
