Commercial Description:
Like traditional pale ales, Tankhouse Ale has a deep copper-red colour. We use five different malts to produce a complex malty texture. The most dominant character of our Pale Ale is the hop. The spicy Cascades is used to give an assertive hop flavour, aroma and bitterness to our ale. The result is a satisfying and complex-tasting beer. Our brewmaster developed this recipe 20 years ago and it has remained his favorite drink of choice

Draught at the Abbott. Pours a fairly clear red-copper with slight off white head. Somewhat mild nose of caramel malts, grains and hops. Bursts with flavour which is beautifully balanced between hops and malts. Very drinkable and enjoyable.

’’Green hopped’’ cask at Volo cask days, October 2008. Pours amber with a thin, bubbly head. There’s an aroma of toffee with a ton of vanilla. It tastes a bit tea like in the hops, in addition to the standard malt mix, toffee, caramel. With all the choices available that day, I do wish I had chosen something different; this was too much like the original tankhouse ale. Still enjoyable.

In short: A decent dry and toasted caramelized Pale Ale that could passed as an Amber Ale. Decent session beer.
How: Tap at brewpub
The look: Clear red-amber body topped by a small beige head
In long: A well malted beer with a malt profile that is grainy and dry, like a toasted bread crust. The big bubbles make the beer feel a bit airy. Caramel toastiness brings distant chocolate notes. Spicy fruity hops (Cascade?, others?), short and dry bitterness. For the style I would have preferred more juicy and refreshing. Still this is a decent beer and the pub is worth visiting. I’ll never forget the day I walked into that pub, ouch it hurt.

On tap - Nice amber color. Aroma is full of bready malt and earthy hops. Flavor is full of hops, surprised me at first but they are well balanced. Has to be at least 40 IBU’s. Overall a solid ale, my stomach will be seeing this one again.

On tap at the Brewpub. Good amber color with lacing. Fruity, hoppy aroma, seems like cascade taking the lead. Flavor of darkish malts, caramel. Big and well-balanced with a bitter hoppy finish. Hop-driven and well-done.
