agillespie81 (190), Denver, Colorado, USA Oct 2, 2009 Aroma - robust roasted malt, subtle coffee;
Appearance - black, opaque, thin though creamy head, poor lacing;
Flavor - basic malt front, slightly sweet back, somewhat bland finish;
Palate - crisp for the style, good body;
Overall - decent effort, lager yeast creates an abundantly crisp profile that distracts from the overall flavor, more of a black lager than a stout. Ungstrup (14724), Frederiksberg, Denmark Sep 3, 2009 Bottled. A dark red - almost brown beer with a brown head. The aroma has notes of sweet malt and caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt and lots of caramel, almost caramel soup, making it a bit cloying towards the finish. The body is a bit light. Thanks Papsoe for sharing. hopdog (5525), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 28, 2009 12oz bottle. Poured a dark, dark brown (almost black) color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of oats, chocolate, some roastiness, and coffee. Tastes of some oatiness, chocolate, and lighter coffee. I thought this one smelled pretty damn good and was somewhat let down with the tastes (on the weaker and thin side). drowland (1360), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Aug 26, 2009 12oz bottle into a pint glass. This has a nice front and middle, but it leaves a funny aftertaste that isn’t well suited to the brew. HopBackDoc (393), Hatboro, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 23, 2009 Pours black with thin off-white head. Mild aroma of malts. Flavor was roasted malt, mild coffee and chocolate. Too carbonated for my taste. I didn’t like the lager yeast, give me a Guinness instead. esjaygee (1467), Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA Apr 11, 2009 Dark brown, ruby highlights with a thin tan head that doesn’t last too long. Aroma of sweet malt, roasted malt and milk sugar. Taste of chocolate, sweet/roasted malt and milk sugar. Mild dry and roasty finish. Ceebs25 (217), Naperville, Illinois, USA Apr 8, 2009 12 oz bottle (I initially rated this on tap at the Amana brewery, but i lost all my notes about that rating besides the overall score, so thats what i’ll use for this rating). Rather light and subtle aroma, most prominent is the roasted coffee, also lactose sugar, black malts, oat grain and also a bit of cereal grain. The pour was quite carbonated with a heavy fizzing dark brown cream colored head, a lighter looking body, and a very dark auburn color. The bottom-fermenting aspect of this stout does give it a slightly different feel than you would expect. More crisp and clean than creamy and smooth. Surprisingly, this does work out pretty well as it makes the mostly simple flavor profile come out in a more interesting way. The flavor consists of a fair amount of rich roasted malts, coffee, mild nuttiness, oaty cereal grains, and actually a decent amount of woody hops in the background as well. So overall, maybe not that spectacular of a beer, but still quite solid and enjoyable. iamqueensblvd (178), , Iowa, USA Mar 27, 2009 foamy head. Less bitter than other stouts i have had and i really like the subtle oatmeal flavor.
