A nice roasted aroma which was also light. Mostly malts some roasted some yeasty not much in the way of bitterness. Smooth but weak on the palate. Cornfield (4966), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA

Pours a deep brown, near black with a decent, dark brown head. It’s got a rich, roasted malt aroma with hints of coffee and chocolate. It’s very smooth in the mouth with mellowed, roasted flavors (the result of lager yeast?) of barley, coffee, and chocolate. Dry, mildly bitter finish.

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Mar 2, 2005 Pours jet black with short living tan head. Aroma is roasted coffee & chocolate. Taste is mostly of roasted malts and coffee. Usually a good stout has excellent palateability...this does not. I suspect its the lager yeast, but its a good beer...not a great stout, but its unique. | 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Jan 19, 2005 Black body, short-lived tan head. Smells like light coffee with some raspberry syrup added. Chocolate cake notes, too. Sweet flavor: chocolate cake, molasses cookies, coffee and cream. Viscous mouthfeel but with a dry finish. Nice little stout. MIBRomeo (1965), Wisconsin, USA

I don’t know the ABV of this beer though. Overall I really like it.

| 2.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 3/10 | 3/5 | 7/20 | Nov 29, 2004 An Oatmeal Stout lager? Hmmm? Pitch black lager. The nose releases wafts of vanilla, milk chocolate, coffee, cola and buttermilk. The flavor is pure chocolate buttermilk. This bottle just has to be infected. So very pungent, but other raters have stated the same. Very tart and lightly chocolatey. Medium-bodied a dry mouthfeel with fizzy carbonation. Short, sour finish. I really like sour beers, but I can’t imagine the brewer actually intending this sort of pungency in an oatmeal stout. The commercial description concurs. Bigtime points deducted for flavor. I can’t really say pass up on this beer as another bottle may be much better than mine. Pigfoot (2226), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA

You think you know a thing or two about beer, until someone puts a bottle in your hand that reads "Oatmeal Stout Lager." Whodidthewhat? Howdidthehey? Huh.
Appearance: fully black, with a nice, burnt tan head.
Aroma: bitter and roasty, with fruity notes.
Texture is limpid, body and mouthfeel and everything else is light, light, light. Short finish. Drinks down extraordinarily smooth, but ...Actually, I have a hard time criticizing this. I could fault it for lacking the complexity, depth, or flavor of a good oatmeal stout, but it’s an oatmeal stout lager. It is what it is. But I’m not sure why it is what it is.
Fruity notes emerge in the middle, and are appreciated.
Not a bad brew at all, but the lack of top-fermenting yeast did not please this stout-fan’s palate at all, only left me yearning for a true stout.
