Commercial Description:
The name Schild Brau means essentially 'Shield beer' in German. This is our Flagship brew, a Microbrew done in the style of the special beers of Munich. This beer is brewed in the style of a Vienna style lager. This style was first developed by Anton Dreher in Vienna in 1841. He used a new type of sweet caramelized malt that gave the beer a wonderful reddish, coppery color and a juicy malt character. Word soon spread to Germany where this style of beer became immensely popular, and stronger versions called Marzen or Oktoberfest were soon made. Our beer uses these same malts to attain a perfect balance between malty sweetness and a firm bitterness. Our Hallertau hops are imported from Germany give it subtle spicy flavor. The repeated awards that we have received for this beer only confirm why many people consider this beer to be synonymous with Millstream Brewing at its best.

Reddish amber color with a beige head. Aroma is tinny with nuts and light floral hops. Taste is mostly toasted malts with a buttery flavor. Just a bit sweet for my liking.

Sampled at the DC/MD/VA/WV/PA Ratebeer Gathering 11/20/04. Clear copper. Aroma is very lightly malty. Taste has notes of caramel, apple and some wheat. Extremely thin and watery. Overall, eh.

Poured a deep reddish amber color with a very small off white head. Sweet malt, raw straw aroma. Taste was very malty, wheaty bite. Overall not a whole lot going on here at all.

2004 bottle compliments of MilkmanDan. Deep red color, clear and filtered, no head. Toffee aroma, coppery and yeasty. Starts out very sour and yeasty, light caramel. Medium and made with a good amount of water but yet not ridiculously thin. Some light sweetness on the end. Surprisingly pretty good and reminiscent of an alt with all of the yeast copper and sweetness in the middle. It works as a marzen though it’s a sweet version of one, with not as much graininess. Didnt find much in the way of spicy hops.

Clear amber body with minimal off-white head. Aroma is medium sweet, butterscotch, caramel. Taste is moderately sweet, butterscotch, caramel, a bit of lemon sourness. Medium body, some stickiness.

Copper Coloring. No Head. I Don’t Know if This Should be Savored. It Seamed a Bit Dusty/Stale Flavor Overall. Some Malts and Spices.. Nothing Real Fantastic.

Clear brown or red color with no head. A little spice on the nose. Very dry and dusty malt taste. Eh, not much to write home about.

My notes are spotty on this one, lets see it was dark brown with decent head on it. tasted good after a long day of looking at tractors.
