Commercial Description:
The name Schild Brau means essentially 'Shield beer' in German. This is our Flagship brew, a Microbrew done in the style of the special beers of Munich. This beer is brewed in the style of a Vienna style lager. This style was first developed by Anton Dreher in Vienna in 1841. He used a new type of sweet caramelized malt that gave the beer a wonderful reddish, coppery color and a juicy malt character. Word soon spread to Germany where this style of beer became immensely popular, and stronger versions called Marzen or Oktoberfest were soon made. Our beer uses these same malts to attain a perfect balance between malty sweetness and a firm bitterness. Our Hallertau hops are imported from Germany give it subtle spicy flavor. The repeated awards that we have received for this beer only confirm why many people consider this beer to be synonymous with Millstream Brewing at its best.

Sampled at Brew Ha Ha 2004. Straight amber in color, clear, with a small head that is quickly fading. Sour grainy aroma. Rich, caramelly malts provide a rather sweet flavor, though a quickly fading flavor if I’ve ever experienced one. Very nice carbonation balance.

Very nice little lager. Nice dark amber-brown body topped by an ok head. Aroma has a touch of corn at the beginning of the aroma, but that fades quickly. A touch of caramel and a hint of sweetness keep this from getting too boring. Very clean flavor, but not too bland. Very drinkable and a nice example of the style.

A darker amber color under the off while head. The big head dies quickly. A slightly earthy aroma. A nice full mouth feel but not heavy. At first, it is slightly sweet and malty. Then, the tartness comes out. The brew goes down easy and has a pleasant after taste.

ReRate-bottle-pours a copper hue with a fizzy white head. sweet apple, malty, aroma that has notes of caramel with notes of german funky yeast lager qualities. farily sweet, almost fruity. the fizzy body here is just not that great i admit. tap at old chicago-iowa city, IA-pours a light copper hue with minimal white head-sweet malty aroma and some earthy notes-flavors are sweet, malty and earthy with some slight hop notes. a decent amber ale.

Acquired via trade. The beer is a dark copper/amber color with a thin beige head that dissipated rather quickly. Very thin lacing. Lightly malty aroma, with a hint of nuts. Medium-bodied with a flavor somewhere between a Marzen and a regular Amber. There is a tartness under the malt and caramel that made the character seem a little off. However it was still fairly easy to drink. The finish is alternatingly fruity and malty. Overall not an exceptional beer but it is smooth with a nice taste.

Orange glowing body with a bit of a tarnished haze to it, thin and fluffy egg shell colored cap, keeps a fluffy collar; lacing is in minimal spotting. Aroma is bleak if not transparently open and clean, I wiff and wiff and don’t get much of anything. As it warmed some slight toasted husks emerged. Perhaps deserving of a lower number then average, but it has no off aromas and is clean so it gets the average. Taste is smooth and clean, light caramel malting, a bit of some toasty aspects, crisp and firm in the front, bready and lightly chewy biscuit with caramel/honey edges smooths out a warm and rendered light chewyness in the finish. Light leafy/grassy hops play very secondary and kinda mingle into a small section of fruityness in the middle area. Feel is firm and smooth, nice little malty chewyness and residual sweeter fruityness across its appealing lighter medium body. This isn’t overly flavorful or substantially full in character, but damn if it ain’t drinkable. I could have alot of these, would make for a nice session O-fest brew for sure.

Pours a deep caramel color with a lasting head from the tap. Flavor and aroma is of hops, caramel, vanilla, and barley. Good mouthfeel and excellent aftertaste.

Very nice amber red color with a small tan head. The aroma is a bit nutty and sweet with faint fruit tones, mostly apple, present. It’s sweet and medium bodied and there is a nice carmel malt bill that is quite smooth. A somkey/nuttyness is lingering in the mouth a bit, making this a good beer overall. Make sure you don’t drink it too cold, because it gets better as it warms.
