Commercial Description:
Just in time for the holidays is our special treat. A dark and chewy bock beer. Around November you’ll find ’chocolate bock’ on tap down at the brewery. The history of Bock beer is a complicated one, going all the way back the dark ages in Europe. In the 14th century, the city of Einbeck became famous for this style of beer. So thats where the name "beck" or "bock" has come from. No other beer has a more pure and intense malt character as a true Bock. Many large breweries in the U.S. have diluted the original strength of this beer, but we make the real thing. The body of this beer is rich, making it a good beer to warm up to during those "special" Iowa winters. The blackened malt that we use in it gives the brew a slight hint of chocolate. Its a smooth brew, having been lagered for over a month in our cellars, in true bock style.

Pour is dark ruddy brownish amber with a thin tan head...smell is faintly fruity with some light pears and hints of toasted bread or melty chocolate...taste is lightly sweet and roasty with a strange off cardboard flavor toward the finish...

A decent beer, but not what I would expect as a bock. Small nose. Smooth palate but chewy. Clean but one dimensional. Lacks melanoidans. Easy drinking and enjoyable, but not as complex as it could be.

Really quite a good beer. Pours a very deep reddish brown with a fluffy head that left some good lace. Plenty of good aromas going on some roasted nuttiness, certainly some chocolate. The flavor follows with the roasty chocolate, some coffee, very nice grainy maltienss that reminds me very much of an authentic German brew. The flavors are very well balanced by a good hop bitterness. The mouthfeel of the beer is mildly silky and well balanced with the slight tinge of alcohol.

The dark, translucent, chestnut brown body is capped with a small, fleeting, beige head of foam. Virtually no lacing is left behind. The nose is bittersweet and chocolaty, with notes of scorched caramel malts, vanilla crème liquor, roasted barley, and cocoa powder. Flavors include dark caramello, woody earth, mild dark spices, and a good amount of nutty chocolate. The palate is medium bodied and soft, drinking smooth and finishing on the dry side. This is a pretty solid brew. It sort of reminds me of a nut brown mixed with a chocolaty bock.

Musty malt and chocolate aromas with some fruity accents. Reddish brown transparent body with small bubbly head. Flavor is darkly roasted malt, some bitter chocolate and figs and slight cardboard. Palate is mild with a light bitter chocolaty duration. Good.

Dark amber brown color with a quickly dissipating head; no head retention and no lacing. Smell is pretty nice; some caramel, dark fruit, and some cocoa powder. Taste is fairly sweet with a chocolate-y finish; maybe some caramel in there, too. High side of medium carbonation with heavier than medium body. I could probably see myself having a few of these in an evening. Pretty good beer.
