Commercial Description:
The second Session Beer is a new one for your St. Pat's day enjoyment called Black Irish Stout. This beer is rich, robust and full-bodied with a big roasted malt finish. I'd call it an extra-stout stout and I think you'll find it as satisfying as finding a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Well, maybe that's an unfair comparison, but if you like dark beers, this one is for you.

Sampled at the brewpub on 6/25/07: Pours a mostly opaque with dark ruby edges and a frothy, dense light brown head. Aroma of lightly sweet caramel and roasted malts with notes of dark chocolate. Has a fairly full body with a nice light chocolate malty sweetness and an earthy bitterness toward a drier, lingering roasted coffee and chocolate malty finish. A nice, dry stout.

black, fine brown head, solid lace, rich dark chocolate aroma with light roasted malts, creamy body, rich blend of the dark chocolate and roasted malts, a hint of sweetness manages to sneak through, light bitterness keeps it dry and provides a nice finish,

Deep dark brown with a moderate creamy light mocha head. Mildly lactic dark mild chocolate, french roast coffee and toasted malt. Mild malt sweet start that is met by roasted dryness and a hint of sweet dark licorice. I usually am not a fan of licorice flavors in my brew, but this one seems to work. Dry bitter chocolate and roasted malt linger. A full bodied session brew.

I wish I could have bought a glass with this logo on it, but I settled for the Sheepshead. This was by far my favorite beer of the night. Smells of chocolate and toasted beans. A nice black color with a mocha top goes down smooth and is full of roasted flavor.

Deep, translucent and charcoal black in color with saliva bubbles forming at the crest. Espresso, burnt chocolate bricks, scorched oats and broiled brown sugar lead the deep, dark nose. Flavor lays in several seconds after gestation with liquefied dark chocolate milk, baked chocolate birthday cake and lactic-esque cocoa crispies. Fuller bodied remnants, and a slick palatary drive by with wholesome cocoa root riding shotgun. Chocolate wheat flakes give new life to morning ritual and breakfast traditions. Burnt brownie bitterness builds in the finish. Tossing, turning dimensions in the mouth, melding in the middle with dark chocolate milk and persuasive coca cola classic-esque caramel characteristics. Dark chocolate morsel memories ring long into the night.

I visited the Ale House a few days after St. Patrick’s day, and they were still featuring this beer and an Irish Red Ale I assumed they brewed for St. Patrick’s day. I thought it very reminiscent of Guinness. It featured some wateriness up front, but had some pleasing mild roastiness in the finish that I noticed in the back of my mouth. Appearance was a rather viscous black with good head formation. Aroma was very mild, and featured some roasted chocolate maltiness. Flavor was as I described above; very mild but pleasing with some wateriness in the mouthfeel. However, this beer was very drinkable and didn’t overpower my meal, which is maybe part of the plan for brewpub beers that are sold alongside meals. All-in-all, solid.

Pours to a dark black body with a light brown head. The aroma’s fairly light and hard to acquire, but I did get some coffee aromas. The flavor is a dry roasty coffee, interesting dark fruit components. The flavor morphs near the finish into a very robust dry black patent malt. The palate starts off a little watery but then kicks into a full bodied creamy dry drink. Lingering dry black malts. I like the interesting fruitiness of this hiding under all that roast.
