Pours very dark brown with a huge foamy, airy tan head that takes forever to settle to something manageable. More foam wells up in the bottle. Uh-oh. Aroma yields pleasant coffee and chocolate. Mouthfeel (underneath the foam) is fairly smooth and lightly oily. No lacing, just huge amounts of residual foam. Flavor is initially pleasant coffee and chocolate, but then, boom, all is overtaken by a vinegary sourness. I think there is a good beer under there but this one shouldn’t have been on the shelf. kp (8500), Woodstock, Georgia, USA

Opaque with nice tan head that would lace a bit. Fairly subdued flavor sweet malts, some roast charcter which leaves a bit of a lingering bitterness. Light to medium in body. | 2.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 5/5 | 3/10 | 2/5 | 8/20 | Jul 9, 2007 Deceptive use of the name Founders? This beer poured almost black with a decent brown head. Odd aroma. Sweet. Some chocolate and coffee and plums. But something else that I couldn’t place. Lemon? This was way too carbonated for a stout in my opinion and also watery. The flavor had something to it that bothered me. The carbonation was part of it but there was something else and I just can’t put my finger on it. Just did not enjoy this at all. Perhaps it was a bad bottle. Other’s that I respect (like Cornfield) seemed to like it.

This stout poured a deep opaque black color with a big dark tan head. The aroma was made up of dark roasted malts, a touch of light pine, and also some chocolate. The flavor was chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, followed up by a light bitter finish. An above average, surprisingly decent flavor for a dry stout. The mouthfeel is full-bodied with a bit of noticable carbonation. A decent dry strout. Cornfield (4975), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 26, 2007 This pours an extremely dark brown body with a respectable chocolate head. The aroma is seriously malty and has coffee with cream, roasted barley, and milk chocolate. It’s smooth to drink and tastes of coffee, milk, barley, and finishes with the bitterness of hard roasted nuts. Nice drink.

Very malty aroma, sweet with strong roastiness and (very) slight chocolate. Spent coffee grounds and even a few Schwarzbier notes. Opaque black body with a creamy tanned-light brown head. Taste is strongly bitter and strongly dry, with roast dominant and a touch of grain/oatmeal in the bg. Faint sourness. Really robustly dry. Thin body with a dry roast aftertaste. Lightly prickles from carbonation. A good one! Very drinkable. BeerBelcher (945), Columbus, Ohio, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Dec 30, 2006 I had lunch at Mishawaka during my holiday travels.
This beer poured an opaque black with an exceedingly abundant head. This beer seeped out of the tap and it took a few minutes to fill my UK-pint glass.
Aroma was a faint chocolate-malt smell.
Taste is very dry, and also pretty good. It is a strong coffee taste with a lingering bitterness.
Mouthfeel is heavy and somewhat astringent, due to the dryness of this beer.
Definitely recommended.
