A pitch black beer with a brown head. The aroma is sweet roasted with notes of alcohol, while the flavor is roasted with notes of chocolate, on a sour background, as if it lacks alcohol, and the body is thin. The end is dry roasted.

Near black colour. Chocolatey aroma with some dark fruit notes (plum, burnt cherry). Fruity flavour with a fair bit of roast and a tart, dry finish. Quite a bold, if unrefined, example.

22oz bottle acquired in trade with BBB63 (thanks!). This one initially poured all head. Finally settled down to a dark black, with red edges, and a tan head. Aromas of chocolate, roast, coffee grounds, and caramel. Tastes of coffee, chocolate, and light roast. LIke some of the other ratings I see, this one ended on a sour and tart finish (detracting from the tastes). Thinner body.

Tried it out of the tap at the brewpub. This beer has a wonderful tan, almost guinness-like head. It’s very full-bodied and slightly bittersweet with an even sweeter aftertaste. There was a hint of oatmeal in the palate. It won the world beer cup in ’96 and ’98, and I’m surprised that I had to add it to this site. A must try if you can find a bottle, or visit the brewpub.

Pours dark brown with a thin light brown head. Smells of sweet malt, some fruity hints. Tastes of chocolate, some dark fruit, some peppery splashes on the finish.
