Commercial Description:
Four Horsemen is brewed as an Irish style Red Ale using six malts and three hop varieties. It was a Silver Medal winner at the 1994 Great American Beer Festival. It has a deep reddish-copper color. Initial taste is the residual maltiness of this popular beer balanced with moderate hop bitterness.

22 oz. Bomber: Pours a dark amber with a frothy off-white head that is mostly lasty leaving nice lacing. Sweet malty aroma has hints of bread dough and caramel. Flavor is sweet and sour(caramel apples) that is thin on the palate while finishing with a mild bitterness. I found this refreshing and enjoyable!

Bottle enjoyed on DLD; couldn’t get an accurate color but it was a shade of red. Smell and taste was "typical" for the style. Dry finish. Solid example of the style, but nothing too distinguish it.

Bottle courtesy of stfun. Pours ruby red with a pinkish white head. Smells of sweet malt, caramel, roses. Tastes of caramel, sugar, some spice. Finish is of toffee.

12 oz bottle from party chalet in Goshen, IN. Dark red amber with huge off-white long lasting head. Aroma is herbally, with light malt sweetness. Flavor is sour cherry, though I can see what the original malt was, slight nuttiness but it really is overpowered by that aged fruit, the beer was not like this the last time I tried it (that was pre-rating). Creamy medium body. Not half bad, I think I liked it better fresh though, nevermind hindsight.

I feel like I have really got lucky considering the reviews from this brewery and their bottling issues. Go Irish! Pours amber with some reddish undertones. White fluffy head and spotty lacing. Aroma is similar to that of green apples. Malty and dry.

12-31-07 bottle.
Clearish red brown in color with a nice fluffy head which quickly vanishes. Smells almost like sour yeasty cherries. Taste is awful - this has to be a bad batch because this is dreadful! Feels like mineral water on the palate - tastes like a Sour Patch Kids Candy that was soaked in battery acid. Gross and sour.

Dark, semi transluscent brown huge foamy tan head. Very high carbonation is evident from the pour. Smell is apple juice like malt. Taste is very sour malt all the way. Extremely fizzy mouthfeel as well. Not sour in a rancid, band-aid or guaze like way, but just simply sour. According to other reviews it seems like this is common and perhaps not a bad bottle...Not very true to the style nor a good beer either.

Beer was deep red in color with thick white head. Good mixture of hops and a hint of spice. slightly bitter aftertaste but not disappointing. good beer to have at any time or season.
