Commercial Description:
Seven Mules is our version of a summer Barleywine, with a high alcohol content and a light color and body. Seven Mules is named after the offensive linemen on Notre Dame’s 1924 football team that featured the Four Horsemen. Like its namesake, Seven Mules will kick your ass if you don’t treat it with respect.

Bottle. This beer started of by saying: We will kick your ass!"...well maybe not me, but my tastebuds were in pretty sad shape after this one. Orange pour with a light tan head. Aroma of musty malts, cinnamon, and a bit of smoke. Flavors of buttery, artificial toffee flavoring and booze. Syupy, sweet with a earthy/syrupy finish. Bleh.

Bottle: Hazy orange in color with a white head. Aroma, almost buttery, ans sweet, mostly caramel. Flavor, citrus, butterscotch, kind of a stanky caramel, some earthy notes. Not very good.

12oz bottle pours copper with a short offwhite head. Aromas of caramel and floral hops. Flavor is slight grapefruit, lots of caramel, and some grassy and earthy notes throughout. Medium body with adequate carbonation. Nothing bad about this one but nothing really good either.

Rating for Seven Mules Kick-Ass Ale

A thick head settles rocky over a bright, copper body with an ever-so-slight haze. Initial aroma of cooked cabbage, replete with a dressing of vinegar. This fades to lemons and yogurt held together with modeling cement. Big hit of ABV noticable on the quaff. Flavor turns around my impression of this brew. A wheat base is all but lost to a big, chewy hit of almost-sour citrus. Light candied notes and acetone contribute additonal plusses and minuses. Rather thick bodied with a long, sweet finish and a sinus full of alcohol.

bottle - Pours copper colored and mostly clear with a thin head, lasting head. It has a mild, hop aroma. The flavor is pretty hoppy with a malt background that includes some light dark fruit notes. Straightforward and strong, this one finishes with a somewhat disappointing flat hoppiness.

A decent head with an amber-orange color, this beer has a lightly-hopped, malty aroma, with a sweet flavor, almost akin to caramel and fruit.

My bottle reads Seven Mules Kick-Ass Ale. The description calls it the brewer’s "version of a summer Barleywine," so I’m not sure why it’s called an American Strong Ale on the site, especially given its flavor and high ABV. I’m siding with the brewery, the folk who intended this to be a barley wine, on this one. Anywho - it pours a light golden amber body with a creamy white head that laces in slippery sheets. The aroma is light malts with a pad of butter and some floral bitterness. The flavor is a sweet fruity malt balanced by a citric zest bitterness that lingers long into the finish. Except for its quick warming effect, the alcohol remains well hidden. Not complex, but a very drinkable and enjoyable barley wine styled ale.
