Commercial Description:
Dating back to 18th century England, the custom of blending pale and dark beers has kept the "Black & Tan" a favorite of experienced beer drinkers for centuries. Our famous recipe combines a robust English Porter with a fine Continental Pilsner, preserving the character of each, while creating the classic taste of the legendary "Black & Tan." In true American style, we bring you the best of both beers as they meet in Mississippi Mud.

After passing it by a 100 times at the grocery store, finally decided to pick one up. Poured transparent very dark amber, fizzy head. Aroma of roasted malt. Absolutely no body, hits the mouth with some roasted malt, very little hops, finish that stops abruptly. A porter light?

This porter pours dark brown with notes of sweet malt and then this drives the flavors on the palate. There is a bit of a tost to the finish.

Fancy jug looking Qt. bottle. Gift from Acknud ( thanks Bill ) Pours an almost see thru dark brown. Small off white head. Aroma is faintly of malt and grain. Taste is mildly of roasted malt and grains. No where near as good as I remember it, but I enjoyed having one again.

I fell victim to a clever marketing scheme: the bottle looked interesting but the beer was nothing special. Very thin mouthfeel and light flavoring. Darker colour more like a porter. Big tan head.

Bottle, 32oz. Pours a dark brown with a huge diminishing rocky white head. Aroma is of light caramel malt, wet cardboard. Has a feel kinda like flat sodapop, slightly sticky with faint carbonation and caramel flavor. Flavor is lightly of roasted malt, caramel, and maybe a hint of nuttiness and very lightly bitter and grassy. Strong notes of paper, wet cardboard, metal. Finish is on the dry side, kinda empty and flat, leaving you with toasty malt residues. This has the worst mouthfeel, not sure why it’s so bad to me. Flavor isn’t bad overall, you can’t go wrong with the nice roastiness there but this one just goes all wrong in many ways.

qt. bottle. Odd aroma, but it has some chocolate, and arguably roasted malt and grassy hop. Nice dark amber color with a beige head that stayed awhile. A bit thin bodied, and the carbonation is not strong, but has a bit of a bite. The flavor is malty, probably a bit nutty, and there seems to be a very low sour note. The finish is not quite dry, and there is roasted malt, but not a great deal of bitter, if any. Still think there’s a sour note, but maybe it’s hop. The finish isn’t really complicated, just hard for me to pin down bitter with the malt/sour? thing. Finally it all seems to end with a bit of nut. Better than many things.

Never a good sign when you have to twist off the cap. Poured a dark amber with a very large frothy head. Pleasant, sweet chocolate aroma with some nut hints. Flavor is very much a roasted chocolate and coffee with some dirt taste too. The finish is pretty bad. It’s very light and nutty and bitter--the dirt flavor is very intense in the finish. Not something that screams to be drank. The bottle is also as lame of a gimmick as the sour-mash they sell in a Mason Jar. Started decent, finished horrible.
