Commercial Description:
Dating back to 18th century England, the custom of blending pale and dark beers has kept the "Black & Tan" a favorite of experienced beer drinkers for centuries. Our famous recipe combines a robust English Porter with a fine Continental Pilsner, preserving the character of each, while creating the classic taste of the legendary "Black & Tan." In true American style, we bring you the best of both beers as they meet in Mississippi Mud.

qt. bottle. Odd aroma, but it has some chocolate, and arguably roasted malt and grassy hop. Nice dark amber color with a beige head that stayed awhile. A bit thin bodied, and the carbonation is not strong, but has a bit of a bite. The flavor is malty, probably a bit nutty, and there seems to be a very low sour note. The finish is not quite dry, and there is roasted malt, but not a great deal of bitter, if any. Still think there’s a sour note, but maybe it’s hop. The finish isn’t really complicated, just hard for me to pin down bitter with the malt/sour? thing. Finally it all seems to end with a bit of nut. Better than many things.

Never a good sign when you have to twist off the cap. Poured a dark amber with a very large frothy head. Pleasant, sweet chocolate aroma with some nut hints. Flavor is very much a roasted chocolate and coffee with some dirt taste too. The finish is pretty bad. It’s very light and nutty and bitter--the dirt flavor is very intense in the finish. Not something that screams to be drank. The bottle is also as lame of a gimmick as the sour-mash they sell in a Mason Jar. Started decent, finished horrible.

I, along with many others, saw the handsome quart bottle and gave this beer a chance. It is extremely watery and really lacks on the flavor. There is, however, a hint of espresso and roasted malts, but it truly does not live up to its name. Watery and Mild.

Poured a clear deep amber color with a thin off-white head. The aroma has notes of mild roast and a hint of coffee over sweet caramel malt. The flavor was malty with some roast and light coffee. Light bodied.

Initial taste is pretty good, there’s a bit of coffee, chocolate taste to it followed by an immediate slightly bitter/metallic aftertaste. I expected this beer to be big and thick with a name like Mud. What I got was a watery beer with a bad aftertaste. Not great. I won’t be getting another.

Took a little road trip down to Kentucky on the Harley and stopped in Bowling Green at the Greewood liquor store. An impressive selection but the only thing there I hadn’t had was this stuff. Jug was a nice gimmick and probably the only thing notable about this beer. And the jug wasn’t a real ceramic jug. It poured a chestnut color with a small tan head that was too embarrassed to stick around. Some yeast, malt, and suet in the nose. Weak and watery. Definite drain pour. I give it a 3 overall for the jug.

Unimpressed. The bottle is fantastic, and I like black and tans, but this just didn’t do it - too watery.
