Commercial Description:
Dating back to 18th century England, the custom of blending pale and dark beers has kept the "Black & Tan" a favorite of experienced beer drinkers for centuries. Our famous recipe combines a robust English Porter with a fine Continental Pilsner, preserving the character of each, while creating the classic taste of the legendary "Black & Tan." In true American style, we bring you the best of both beers as they meet in Mississippi Mud.

quart jug. clear pour is nutty mahogany brown with a small tan head. the smell is more pils than porter... slight nutty coffee mixed with lagery yeast, sweet barley, grass and some spiciness. it tastes a bit like a dark (malt) lager... malt, sweetened spent barley water, grass, yeast, faint chocolate and nutty coffee along with a card board-y/wet paper bag flavor... though not corked or flawed, just bad. the body is on the light side... prickly abundant carbonation doesn’t help. the texture bugs me... a bit like syrup only make with artificial sugar. 4/3/4/2/10/2.3

Pours a cola colour with a large tan head. The aroma is very saazy, with some chocolate and dark fruit. Smells and tastes really light. Chocolate and saaz on palate. Very, very light porter... That being said, there is nothing I dislike about thid beer. Also there isn’t much I like about it either, but drinkable.

Pours deep brown, almost reddish. Tall beige head. NIce aroma roasrted malt and dark fruits. With a slight aroma of saaz. The flavour is much the same. Rich malty dark fruit on the palate. And a strong Saaz. It is very much what it claims to be a porter blanded with a pilsner. Good beer, very unique, lots of character.

Well, at least the bottle was excellent; I did like the old corn liquor jug style. This was not an awful beer but neither was it particularly good or even almost good. The head was a foamy ivory and extreme in size, but no lacing here. Aroma was almost noticeable, perhaps some or malt or maybe not. The well-carbonated brownish colour looked more like a cola than anything else. Taste was not exactly a black and tan, more like a darker swill.

Smooth and easy to drink, but not much flavor, really. Too weak and bland. Thumbs down overall.

Bottle. Dark yet translucent chestnut with a rocky off-white head. Very grainy nose, but definitely sweet. Also a watery caramel, hint of chocolate, light bubblegum, hint of citric hops, but also a stale vegetal odor which oddly combined with the graininess and acidity of the hop aroma to produce a light vomitous reek. Subtle but nice. Flavor was subtler to say the least. Bland would be an overstatement unfortunately. It was reminiscent of spent grain, a hint of malt, root, light zesty citrus, and overly watery. Palate was correspondingly dull and lacked even moderate carbonation. That said I liked the bottle.

bottle, pours dark amber, medium off white head. Light hoppy aroma, some toasted/nutty malt notes. Roasted malt flavors in the vein of a swarzbier, ends lightly hoppy and mildly dry. Drinkable.
