Commercial Description:
Dating back to 18th century England, the custom of blending pale and dark beers has kept the "Black & Tan" a favorite of experienced beer drinkers for centuries. Our famous recipe combines a robust English Porter with a fine Continental Pilsner, preserving the character of each, while creating the classic taste of the legendary "Black & Tan." In true American style, we bring you the best of both beers as they meet in Mississippi Mud.

Pint jug. Eh, cool bottle, weak beer. I mean weak weak as in bland. Thin thin, with no real flavor of either the "black or tan" part of a regular black and tan.

Blah. Just blah. No, I mean, yuck. Just yuck. Pour was a reddish amber brownish color with a small initial head that went weak. The aroma was lightly hopped and nothing else. The flavor was sour/bitter with some bad coffee in there, some grassy hops, and an acidic sharpness. I wish I woulda passed on the "cool" looking 32oz bottle that I assumed was somewhat of a rarity having bought it in Arizona and never seen it in Delaware. Shoulda paid attention to the fact that the cap was a soda style screw cap. Blah. Mouthfeel was thin and acidic. After 4oz and allowing this to warm a little.... POUR! Right down the drain. Why waste my liver on junk like this?

Jug: I was hoping there was a bit more to this since the jug looks so tough and cool. It pours a clear brown with fluffy off-white head. Mainly malty sugary aromas, a little sweet chocolate. The taste is pretty bland and overly malty. I wonder if this should even be categorized a "porter" by ratebeer since it seems to have no characteristics of one except the thin, oily feel. But there was no smoky or charcoal or roasted aromas or flavor. If you could get points for bottle presentation, then this would be up there!

The ol’ Quart jug, in celebration of my day as DD! Had it some years before joining RateBeer, it was practically my first outré bottled beer. What I’ve got now is something that pours a more ruddy than porter brown color. A slightly roasty porter smell is there, but a bit hard to find. So, (allegedly) blending two distinct beers together seems to yield a standard dark beer. It’s mostly a gimmick, and from what I’m reading here, a stunt for the tourist trade. But hey, it leaves me with a bottle to start yeast in.

Oh, and I finished the whole jug in one sitting, too. No biggie.

Pours a dark amber color with a nice amount of froathy offwhite head. Looks delicious. Aroma is very sweet and caramely, slight slight roasted aroma undertone. Flavor is pretty watery, caramel sweet, slight metallic flavor but not much there. Overall, not bad, not good, but bottle is pretty cool, you gota admit.

I swore to myself I’d never drink this. And yesterday, I was @ European Street with a mate who said he would purchase it, if I could finish it. I don’t like the idea of sitting through a beer which would merit me winning a t-shirt like that you buy at the OkeeFanokee Swamp gift shop, only saying "I survived the Mississippi Mud and all I got was this stinking t-shirt" deal. See, we have witnessed prior attempts by people thinking they can finish it. They usually get sick or wuss out.WE even had the phone ready to call another mate who had witnessed so many others fall short of finishing this nasy....whatever this stuff is. Well, I figure I’d break that and win a free beer to rate at that. Pours out of the "Tourist Trap of Bottled Beers," with a aroma of salty dirt like malts and caramel. Flat cola look, flat cola taste...or flat beer. Had carbination, but the taste itself is a fistfull of mud. Theres a bit of chocolate in there with the malts, but its not helping it at all, thats for sure. Caramel is definately dominate. Mm caramel flavoured water. Could they sell it to gamers? They would appreciate the twist off top. nasty and being its listed as a porter is just insulting. ...................oh, and yes, I finished it to the last drop. ***Raises hands in victory and head in shame***

bottle. Pours a red hue with a disappearing head. The aroma is pretty faint, but okay. Faint woody hops are noticeable and token semi-sweet malts. Drinking it is much less satisyfing. There is a small amount of chocolate in the finish and I did enjoy some of the pilsener characteristics. However, the mouthfeel and many flavors here are that of a cola. The finish is also a little sour, like diet cola maybe. .

One pint, erm, jug. Pours garnet with a massive, tight beige head. The aroma is peppery with some malt, charcoal, and even a touch of alcohol. The body is disappointingly watery. The flavor is quite grainy with some hints of ash and astringency. The finish is like a very weak Pepsi. This has potential, but needs a lot of work.
