Commercial Description:
Mitchell's has two locations that are nowadays unrelated and they taste differently. The bottles look identical, but the label states if it's brewed in Cape Town or Knysna. The beers from the brewery in Knysna is ony distributed to the Garden Route (from Mossel Bay to Port Elizabeth), and to a few places inland from there. The Cape Town brewery supplies the rest of South Africa.

Draught at La Piazza, Sedgefield. Available on tap in most bars in the Knysna area. National penetration is otherwise poor, due to the iron grip South African Breweries has on the market and the general ignorance of the South African beer drinking public (which is a bit odd, considering that they are by and large educated wine drinkers). This bitter is a very good example of the style. Slightly bitter, not too carbonated, floral aroma - a great session beer. On a month’s trip to the region I drank exclusively Mitchell’s products (this and Raven stout) and wine (of course).

Draught at Cliffhanger Pub, Bloukrans Bridge. Amber coloured. Aroma of eggs, tea, hops and fruits. Fruity, hoppy and bready flavour with plenty bitterness. Dry and bitter finish. Light to medium carbonation level. Medium bodied. Very well balanced and fresh.
