Commercial Description:
The Moa Brewing Company was established in 2003 by Josh Scott with a focus on brewing premium, boutique beers to an ever discerning beer market. Moa’s key point of difference is in its brewing technique. Bottled fermented and conditioned to give a natural, more consistent carbonation and flavour. The beer is left to lie on it’s lees until deemed ready to be ’disgorged’, a process that involves removing most of the lees from the bottle resulting in a clean, bright beer, right to the very last drop. Hence Methode Traditionelle. Most enjoyable with food or chilled on it’s own.

Bottle ( 375ml-green ). Shared by blankboy with me and garthicus. Cloudy and very bubbly pale gold with a large fluffy/sticky lasting white head, nice lace drapes. Aroma of dry grass and light lemon, not sweet - quite mild. Tastes of lemongrass and very dry mild herbal bitterness - the bitterness does build some as it warms. Light body, a bit astringent, a surprising long, fairly bitter finish. Pretty solid, no plastic, crisp and pretty bold-flavoured.

Thanks to Blankboy shared with HogTownHarry and I. Appearance: Cloudy straw body with a glorious frothy white head. Aroma: Lots of yeast, ever so slightly spicy, a little grass too. Flavour: Woah, I didn’t see those hops coming, nice little hop kick, yeast, spice, nicely carbonated with a long fruity/bitter finish. Not bad. Surprising.

Bottle picked up by Mathieu at S.A.Q. for me. Heard about it but found it overrated. Gushing foamer. very light colour, with of course lots of white head.A somewhat beery aroma. Dry, a little hoppy, not much taste. Average at best mouthfeel. Not finishable.

Gusher. Pours pale golden with a large, persistent, but unappealing (in a pond scum kinda way) frothy head. The aroma is quite hoppy, seems to be a mix of grassy, spicy euro hops and the more subtle white wine-like NZ hops. Hints of DMS surface but nothing too offensive, the light sweet malt hides it. Flavours include sweet malt and cooked corn alongside a sparkling white wine note. Light bitterness shows in the finish. High carbonation suits the beer nicely.

In short: An unusual barnyard pilsner-ish ale of some kind.
How: Bottle 375ml. A few times. Consumed a few days after purchase, as fresh as it can be in North America
The look: Cloudy blonde body topped by a large white head
In long: The unusual nose is intriguing with notes of barnyard, bread and dry flowers. From the first sip I was taken into unfamiliar territory. The carbonation is more than lively yet it is never aggressive. Gotta love the mouthfeel on this one. A lot of crisp cereals, slight leather notes, dry hay, dry wild flowers, white pepper, a little citrusy. I could really feel a champagne character in this one. Very interesting. But there is one problem with that beer, it skunks easily (green bottles don’t help here). The girlfriend loves it and buys it often. I tell her not to take bottles from the shelves yet nearly half the bottles that we’ve opened have been skunky. Even skunky the beer is nice and I’m not sure why New-Zealanders would love a skunky beer, unless the beer is not skunky but it is actually sheepy and I cannot tell the difference.

Bottle sample at Knoxville Brewers Jam 2009. Poured clear copper color with an average fizzy off-white head that was mostly lasting and good lacing. Moderate toasted malt aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium bittersweet flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. Solid brew.

375 ml bottle from SAQ, served cold in a Scotch Irish taster glass. BB 160311. Gushed slightly.

App.: Cloudy bright golden with a very large loose white froth. Aroma: Lots of nice bread/toast/biscuit, some yeast and bread dough, nice citrus/floral/grassy/peppery hops, some slightly darker malt aromas of caramel/burnt sugar. Palate: Medium body, very lively effervescence. Flav.: A nice blend of toasted malts and peppery green hops with some citrus notes and undertones of yeast; dry with fair bitterness and a pleasant malty finish.

Great take on the style!

Bottle at Minibar in Queenstown. Pours an attractive hazy gold color with a big white head. Aroma of sweet malts, grain, hops, straw, and light herbs and spices. Flavor is malty, with hops, grain, straw, grass, and mild spices. Sharp, crisp, bubbly, fresh mouthfeel from the active carbonation. I’ve been blown away by how well New Zealand does the lighter styles, and this is a great example of a pilsner.
