Commercial Description:
Black Imperial India Pale Ale, spawned from west coast brewers who have no problem bending what we think about traditional ale styles, is dark, rich and extremely hoppy. Made from the finest Two Row barley, fresh Moab water, house yeast and lots of hops, it’s then fermented in American oak, dry hopped and bottle conditioned. The bottle conditioning, or secondary fermentation, provides carbonation. Expect a small amount of yeast in the bottle. The Black Imperial Pale Ale with pair with nachos, buffalo chicken wings, gyro salad or wrap, smoked chicken salad sandwich and margarita chicken. Store bottle upright, chill to 50°F - 55°F for serving in wide mouth glassware. It is important to allow this ale to warm in the glass; a fuller flavor will be yours to enjoy.

Bottle shared at John’s gathering. Poured a dark amber with an off-white head. Had not idea this was going to be a black IPA, a style I am admittedly not terribly keen on. Aroma of some wildflowers, a bit of pine, and biscuity malt. Flavor is bitter with a buttery biscuity beginning (hurray for alliteration), some bitter pine and grapefruit rind, leading to a surprisingly sweet though somewhat metallic ashen finish. Hops don’t seem dominant enough for this to be a true double and the few off flavors are hurting my enjoyment of this. Eh.

1 liter bottle acquired in trade with douglas88 (thanks!). Nice packaging on this one. Poured a deeper and cloudy amber-brownish color with an average sized off white head. Aromas of pine, floral hops, caramel, and toasty. Tastes of the same toastiness, earthy, pine, and caramel. Nice and hoppy finish.

Dark amber with a small, off white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of floral hops, pine, caramel malts, toasted dough, citrus fruits, and light alcohol. Taste of pine, citrus fruits, toffee malts, grass, light tobacco, and a bitter finish with some light alcohol. Thanks to hopdog for sharing!

Bottle from hopscotch. Thanks man! Sweet bottle and wrapping. Nose is very interesting - floral and some citrus/fruity hops, a good deal of dark malty sweetness, and soft barrel effects. Dark brown more or less black pour, creamy beige head. Nice mix of dark malts, roast, sweetness and earthy bitter hops. Some citrus as well as soft oak notes. Bitter dry finish. Solid beer.

Courtesy hopscotch. Pours a dark brown color topped by a small, off white head that shows good retention. The aroma shows citrus and pine hops along with hints of chocolate and roasted malts. The flavor follows with chocolate, caramel, and roasted malts to go with the pine hop bitterness on the backend. There is definitely an oak presence along with the alcohol. Medium bodied with good carbonation with a roasty bitter finish. A nice take on the style.
