Had not idea this was going to be a black IPA, a style I am admittedly not terribly keen on. Aroma of some wildflowers, a bit of pine, and biscuity malt. Flavor is bitter with a buttery biscuity beginning (hurray for alliteration), some bitter pine and grapefruit rind, leading to a surprisingly sweet though somewhat metallic ashen finish. Hops don’t seem dominant enough for this to be a true double and the few off flavors are hurting my enjoyment of this. Eh.

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Aug 7, 2009 Courtesy hopscotch. Pours a dark brown color topped by a small, off white head that shows good retention. The aroma shows citrus and pine hops along with hints of chocolate and roasted malts. The flavor follows with chocolate, caramel, and roasted malts to go with the pine hop bitterness on the backend. There is definitely an oak presence along with the alcohol. Medium bodied with good carbonation with a roasty bitter finish. A nice take on the style.
