Cloudy brown pour from a 12 oz bottle. Little head and the beer seems to be very lightly carbonated – I hauled this back from Cincinnati a couple of months ago, maybe the combination of the ride in the car, the twist off caps, and the wait in my basement let it go flat. Aroma is good – perhaps the best thing about this. Complex malt, burnt malt, chocolate malt and coffee overtones make for a good sniff. Flavor is OK but disappointing after such a great aroma. It is light for a stout, more like a porter or even a dark lager. Pleasant burnt and toasted grains, rather weak finish with metallic overtones. Thin bodied with none of the creamy frothy mouthfeel that makes Stout stout. Better than many brews, but there are a lot of stouts out there that are vastly superior. I liked Moerlein’s OTR ale quite a bit, and their Helles was solidly abover average. This is a bit of a disappointment – but I have high hopes for the Barbarossa.

Dec 9, 2009 Pours near black with reddish hues and a fully receding tan head. Notes of toffee, nuts, and caramel malt. Thin to medium bodied with soft carbonation. A pretty simple and thin stout.

Aug 28, 2009 12oz bottle acquired in a couple of trades. Poured a dark brown color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of roast, caramel, and a trace of butteriness. Tastes of roast, caramel, and a lighter bitter coffee finish.

Aug 22, 2009 Draft. Pours dark brown with small tan head. Aroma of coffee, malt, dried fruit, and caramel. Flavors are mostly the same with some brown sugar. Body is disappointingly thin and watery. Sweet, dry, roasty finish. Not awful overall, but disappointing for this style.

Aug 21, 2009 Bottle. Pours brown with a small light tan head. Aroma of sweet malt, coffee, roasted malt. Flavor is mostly just sweet roasted malt, some coffee notes remain but the palate is rather watery and thin. A good beer for Lion Brewery I guess. I didn’t dislike it as much as some of the previous raters.

Aug 21, 2009 Aroma of roasted malt, some coffee, some prune. Flavor also roasted to a point of astringency and the prune note becomes a bit putrid. Does have a nice, roasted finish. Pretty thin bodied, as others have said, notes of water in fact start to overcome the roasted finish. Not the worst beer ever...

Aug 11, 2009 12oz twist-off bottle. Dark brown color. aroma of coffee roast. Flavor is light bodied roasted malt. Thin bodied. Great roast.
