Draft @ Montana Ale Works: Penetrable molasses-brown. Creamy light-beige head. Ho-hum aromas of dark chocolate, grapefruit peels, black licorice, brown sugar, and plasticlike phenolics. Soft carbonic prickles. Early hop bitterness links up with bitter chocolate and dry cocoa-tinged malt. Roast-derived acidity hampers the body as it compounds the lightly acidic hoppiness. Plasticlike phenols gracelessly exude to compound the hollow and airy center. Forceful hop bitterness gradually emerges and deadens the malt subtleties while clashing with the unrefined gritty roast. Finishes bitterly charred, astringent and faintly sprucelike, with a late peachy and grapefruity hop flourish. Suffers from being too thin, acidic, hoppy, and plasticlike. Not good.

Jan 17, 2009 Dark brown pour with nice thick tan head. Coffee and some chocolate on the nose. Flavor is heavy roast of coffee with some smoke and a nice bittersweet chocolate to the finish. The heavy roast sticks with you until the finish.

Jun 14, 2008 Dark with a frothy beige head. The aroma is really smoky and coffee like. There’s some nice bitterness on the flavor. Some chocolate also with a rather burnt character. I enjoyed this surprisingly more than I expected to. Quite tasty.

Jun 9, 2006 Brown-black body with beige head. Aroma is medium sweet, coffee, chocolate, roast. Taste is medium sweet, strong coffee with attendant roasty bitterness, some burnt. Evokes coffee grounds. Medium-full body. My friend tells me that this beer can be quite good but that it’s pretty inconsistent -- he felt that we were having it on one of the bad days.

Mar 14, 2006 On tap @ GF Blues and Brews Festival. Pours a deep dark brown color. Aromas of coffee, hint of chocolate, and some smoke. Flavor was espresso like with some smoke lingering on the finish.

Mar 25, 2004 (3/02) Pours black and thick with smallish head (bad glassware sanitation, I think) that lingers but does not lace(?). Espresso roasting on the nose, some burnt chocolate. BTW-how nice to have a non-smoking brewpub where you can actually smell the beer! Smooth palate coats the mouth with a mild but slightly bitter roasted maltiness. Pretty one-dimensional, but tasty and cheap during happy hour.
