Commercial Description:
Custer’s Last Stout is a Foreign-Style stout. It has an initial malt sweetness and chocolate flavor with a dry roasted bitterness finish. It is brewed with English malted barley and domestic Fuggle hops. This variety of hop adds a slight herbal (licorice) aroma and flavor to our stout. Foreign-Style stouts originated when English breweries added more hops and alcohol to their classic dry stouts as a natural preservative. They did this so the beer would survive the long journey to their far reaching empire around the world. Sixteen ounce glass in a brew pub. Rich dark coffee flavors with a slight note of dark chocolate. Very good and quite drinkable. Thumbs up.

Tap @ Brewpub: Dark brown, near black pour with a finger of creamy tan head. Nice, thick bits of sticky lacing. Roasty, chocolate, and espresso notes in the aroma. Huge taste presence with a very chewy mouthful. Rich and lingering finish with more espresso and bittersweet chocolate. Wow, this was very nice!

Draft at brewpub. Black color with an average creamy head that mostly lasting with excellent lacing. Moderate chocolate coffee aroma. Medium to full body with a creamy texture. Medium balanced sweet coffee flavor with a medium dark sweet finish of moderate duration. This is a standout beer.

Creamy and lasting tan head tops the almost black body. Sweet chocolate and coffee nose has this fun toasted character that sets it apart a bit. Gains big points for its grapey and date-like fruit suggestions as well as mild smoky feel. Medium bodied, creamy texture, foamy carbonation. Floury, toasty and of restrained acidity and bitterness. Well weighted stout.

On tap @ pub: pretty light bodied for a stout; substantial roastiness and chocolate maltiness; lightly hopped with the balance mostly coming from the roasted malt; a note of dirty hops; another solid but boring one from MBC.

[At GABF 2004] A pitch black beer with a chocolate brown head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of chocolate as well as lesser notes of roasted malt. The flavor is lovely sweet and again with chocolate being most dominant. Hey - I want more of this.

Dark with a creamy head and a deep roasty taste. I wasn’t too fond of this right at first but I started liking it the more I drank.
