Commercial Description:
Don’t be afraid of the dark! We brew this smooth black ale in the tradition of Irish-Style Dry Stout. A Creamy, yet light-bodied beer, with a big roasted barley flavor.
Moon River earned four medals at the 2005 Georgia Craft Brew Challenge hosted by Georgians for World-Class Beer. On Nov. 5, more than 200 lucky people packed the Biergarten at Atlanta’s 5 Seasons Brewing Company to taste the best beers made in Georgia. During the blind judging session, judges evaluated 35 beers and deemed:
• UK Ale Category: 3rd Place - The Bomb

Very dark, ruby-colored ale. Small, creamy, off-white head with poor retention and poor lacing. The aroma is of chocolate and espresso. Vanilla and toasted cashews. The flavor is well-bittered. Thin and watery. Very dry, though. Light-bodied with a dry mouthfeel. Lengthy, bitter, dry, burnt finish.

On tap at the 2005 GCBC: Nearly opaque dark brown pour has a dense light tan nitro head. Very mild semi-sweet, semi-roasty aroma has some hints of chocolate. Starts very subtle, malty and well-roasted with some dark chocolate and coffee flavor. Thin bodied, but very drinkable.

2005 GCBC. Nitro. What starts as a full 4 oz glass of foam cascades down to a perfect pour. Brown color with a medium sized long lasting creamy tan head. Aroma of coffee and roasted malt. Light chocolate roasty flavor. Dry finish with a smooth creamy mouthfeel.

Black with a small tan head, fair lacing. A malt aroma with a coffee nose. Bitter and tart malt/coffee flavor. Dark and creamy palate, a little light and watery.

Pours like a Guinness - nice thick and rolling. Faint smoky aroma. Thick smoked flavor that I usually do not like - but goes well here. Deep dark, black appearance. Good compliment to the fried fish sandwich I had.

Long lasting camel head. Similar coffee aroma as their porter, but starchier and with some creosote. Not quite opaque. Grassy and a little green, well bitter. Needs some more oomph to the body. Akin to an oyster stout. A bit watery. Medium coffee bitter finish.

This was really a bit of a dissapointment overall for a stout, but it wasn’t bad. Dark ruby brown, but not quite black with that ultra-tiny bubble wet head from the nitrogen. The aroma had a very strong maple syrup and brown sugar character. The flavor was more of the same mixed in with some coffee, followed by a bit of bitterness in the finish. The flavor had that funny flavor that nitrogen dispensed beers always have and would be better without it. The body was definitely too thin for a stout, though.
