Nose was smoky and roasty and malty and strange for a sour. Taste is sweet and tart and malty and strange but also appealing. DaSilky1 (2022), San Diego, California, USA

Very roasty nose with interesting lactic sour backing. Flavors were sour, roasty and actually it all seemed to combine interesting and nice. DenverLogan (421), MileHi, Colorado, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 10, 2008 Dark mohogany; small head. Subtle tart aroma. Lovely, crazy and fun concoction at the Liar’s Club...with some notes of deep, dark wood, others of a highly concentrated Duchesse de Bourgogne, some vinegar, prunes, unsweetened chocolate, dark roasted wood, wild esters. Quite unique. Snojerk321 (2021), San Diego, California, USA

Nose of toasted oak, sweet and sour plums and currants. Flavor was very woody and faintly sour. JohnC (2287), Mission Viejo, California, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Aug 25, 2009 I had this beer on tap at Beachwood BBQ’s sour beer fest.
This soured version of Death and Taxes (a schwarzbier) is interesting. The souriness hits you up front but it definitely finishes w/ the roastiness of a schwarzbier. Unique & tasty. hapjydeuce (773), Del Mar, California, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 10, 2008 On tap at Liar’s Club in Alpine. Deep brown color with draft head that settles quickly. Aroma was difficult to pick up, but comprised mostly of smoky and fruity characters with some of the sourness noticeable. The flavors are of black malts, a light roasted nose and wet earth that present an unorthodox impression. Some dark fruits mixed in with the balsamic sour notes that give a puckering finish. Kind of a strange beer. padrefan98 (788), (San Diego) Santee, California, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 22, 2008 Sampled at the Second Anual Stone Sour Festival on 7/20/2008. A pretty average sour ale. A little vinegar in the finish. Overall just ok. fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 28, 2008 Sampled at the Stone Sour Fest. Nose was a little weak. Flavor was still sour. But not an excellent sour like some that we had there. Roasted malts were very interesting in combo with the sour flavors.
