harrisoni (6703), Ashford, Kent, England Oct 19, 2009 On tap at The Rake. Red chestnut colour, very thin head. Nutty and far too carbonated making it hard to drink, some lovely rich jammy fruit. Its a rich ESB in the malts, but not too much hops. Seeing that no hops are used, that makes sense. Fine is a bit fruity sweet. SamGamgee (1394), Santa Cruz (La Selva), California, USA Oct 13, 2009 Draught at The Red. Dark brown with some red tinting and a beige head. Malty caramel and light toast aroma with a fresh woody quality. I guess this is redwood, right? The flavor has a lightly sweet maltiness with tome toasty grain, light chocolate, and light bitterness that seems to be coming from the redwood. A little on the watery side, but a decent mouthfeel. Being my first and possibly only encounter with redwood in my beer, I’m not really sure what to think here, though this was definitely a competent creation. It might be lacking refinement, but I can see this going places in the future. illidurit (851), Santa Cruz, California, USA Sep 5, 2009 On tap at The Red in Santa Cruz. Pours a deep orangey copper color with a creamy khaki cap of head. Aroma is caramel with some slight roastiness and herbs. Flavor starts out nice with a round caramel character tempered by some herbal notes but the finish is quick to turn vegetal. I appreciate the creativity but the aftertaste tastes, unsurprisingly, like leaves. Very nice mouthfeel but I can’t call the drinkability very good. Papsoe (14613), Frederiksberg, Denmark Aug 10, 2009 On tap. Clear orangey brown with a rough beige head. Aroma of dried fruit, port and yeast. Medium body with sweet dried fruit and some yeast. Very subdued bitterness. 110709 yespr (11613), Copenhagen O, Denmark Jul 23, 2009 From tap flavour. Pours hazy dark amber with a small off-white head. Aroma is roasted caramel and light Belgian yeasty. Subdued sweet and spiced yeasty flavoured. Mild phenolic and roasted finish. mpersinger (176), , California, USA Oct 11, 2008 On draft at Jupiter (from summer..but easy to remember) ruddy brown with just a halo of tan foam. Malt and mineral aroma.
Malt-forward balanced character with cocoa as well spruce notes I’d associate with wet hops. Moderate carbonation and a somewhat slick body. Complicated by a long astringent finish one might get from Chinook in the kettle. Remarkable, even more so since it was brewed without hops. JorisPPattyn (5155), Antwerpen, Belgium Jul 7, 2008 Coca-Cola brown beer, with neary no head. Coffee nose, soft-roasted coffee beans, sweetish. Very dry woody, tad fruity, very roasted, and really not hoppy! Coffee returning in the finish, and pine. Not very well-bodied, well-carbonated, slick. Very special, and an unbelievable treat to have it here in Belgium! Thanks, CK! bb (2905), Martinez, California, USA Jun 26, 2008 Draft. Bronze color with an off-white head. Rich malt aroma with ligh grass and herbs. Malty, cocoa, herbal, grassy flavor. Medium body. Lingering cocoa, malt, herbal tones, and grass. Very drinkable.
