Fin (2005), Merton, Oxfordshire, England May 4, 2008 Cask at Reading Beer Festival 02-05-08 following a two hour queue to get in grrrr! Pours mid amber with a nice white bubbly head that swiftly departs. Aroma was honey, yeast and hops but not as full on hoppy as I anticipated. The first mouthfull made me think that it was quite sticky sweet but the the hops burst through sticking to the cheek pouches and teeth enamel. Wonderfully fruity, tropical fruit abound as does some sweet tangerines and honey again. A great beer that I would love to try again at some point.
Magic_dave6 (3476), Glasgow, Scotland Jul 8, 2008 Cask in Blackfriars. This was a special that Jon boy got in for me on the fly without telling me, had it straight after venting, a day after venting and 2 days after also, amazing the way it has developed. Pours like SN Bigfoot, aroma is bursting with american aroma hops to start with, however as it developes the caramalt shows a big presence, infact by the end you’d have mistaken this for a barley wine easily. Taste is wonderfully balanced, yes its very sweet due to the massive caramalt presence, however the american hops are excellent also, itsa pritty full body, but still dangerously drinkable. This for me is infact an american hoppy barleywine rather than an imp ipa, but either way its such an awsome beer, and im very very happy indeed about the fact i have another 8 gallons of the stuff for tonight. fonefan (4045), Ulfborg, Denmark Jun 4, 2008 Cask gravity @ Reading Beer Festival 2008. Clear amber color with a average, frothy, good lacing, fully lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, caramel, moderate to light heavy hoppy, flowers, perfume, grape, orange shell, light alcoholic. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is flat. Very very nice ;O)). (010508) Finn (1044), Tromsø, Norway May 18, 2008 Golden colored. A tiny creamy head. Aroma of ripe grapes. Complex fruity flavor. The alcohol shines through giving a warming effect. Rune (1499), Tromsø, Norway May 14, 2008 Gravicask at Reading Beer Festival 08. Dark brown body with ruby highlights. Thin, but lasting beige head. Strong - very strong - hoppy content in aroma and taste. Nice gliding transition from a piny hop aroma to a darker hoppy taste. Full of dark and dried fruits complemented by dark berries and a solid bitter ending. It surely needs more than one sampling to really appreciate its complexity, so I’ll be looking for this great brew for later enjoyment (02.05.2008). Gravity, at the Reading beer festival, in the company of a bunch of my favorite Ratebeer people.
Warm copper, just off-white soapy head. Fresh pine tree aroma, vanilla ice cream, a little bit of the friendly smell of warm dog. Sweet candy hop bitterness, full and satisfying, but still silky soft; farmy finish with just a little pine resin. Definitely strong, but the alcohol just remains a lingering tingle around the edges, and my glass emptied far too quickly. This is a fabulous beer, though seeing some of the other ratings for it (and hearing from the brewer about the hop varieties used) I think it might have faded slightly from it’s peak. Still, this is the beer I want for rating 1000. Just having this beer being made is such an exciting example of what is going on in the UK brewing scene. The best of British tradition, but influences from the US, Denmark...just the whole world of innovative, flavorful beers going on.
Cheers to Justin at Moor! Cheers to the people in Reading who put on such an excellent festival! And most of all, cheers to all of you, my fellow RBers, with whom I have had the pleasure of sharing, trading, discussing these last 1000 beers!
