this could have been a porter based on its profile...very dark brown with a soapy white head...chocolate and toast in the nose, a little bit of smoke and burnt chocolate in the flavor. aftertaste was a little hoppy, and there was very little carbonation. this beer was ok, a decent session beer, but nothing special, nor nothing overly bad.

Oct 1, 2008 Bottle from BTB in Vancouver, WA--A dark ruby ale with a rich dry chocolate malt taste. Poured a deep dark color with a nice thin beige-tan head. Silky, thick, yet mild bodied. Chocolaty, nutty, mildly smoky. Crisp. Only 3.4% ABV. RIch bodied in roasty smokish finish. Good beer to go the distance.

Aug 12, 2008 Opened up nicely as it warmed. No head and a black colour. Malt and cough syrupy. For the price I’d prefer a Tooheys Black. Low ABV.

Aug 11, 2008 Red-brown, like a cola. Small, fast beige head. Almost headless. Fairly mild Chocolate malt aroma. Flavor: Dark choclolate, roasted malt, coffee, sweet. Dry, somewhat bitter finish. Reminds me of a Porter although it has a lighter mouthfeel yet bursting with flavor.

Jul 31, 2008 Updated: Aug 3, 2008It’s been about a year or so since I last had this fine brew, and it’s as good if not better than I remember it. Probably in part do my furthered understanding and appreciation of different beer types.
Black Cat poured nice and black into the glass with a small head and a bit of dark ruby clinging to the edges where light tried to pass through. In the nose I caught heavy malty sweetness with a bit of burnt raisins or licorice. overall, a very malty sweet beer, a bit on the dry side which helps balance the sweet roasted malts, raisins and dark cherries I picked up. About halfway through, I detected a bit of hop spice on the sides of my tongue, but overall it is the malt which dominates Black Cat. Definitely a medium body weight, heavier than some other black ale I have drank, but still a very easy drinker. I found my glass empty before the end of the hour long episode. I don’t know how or when it happened, but I made some pretty quick work of the Moorhouse Black Cat.
Overall, a fine example of a black ale. I would rank her up there with some of the best. If this Black Cat should stumble across your path, don’t run away, but instead bring her home with you and give her a loving home.

Jul 7, 2008 Bottle at Cockney Pub, Århus. Pours a clear, almost black body with a small beige to tan head. Lightly roasted and toffeeish aroma, sure on the malty side, but with a little fruits and hops in the background. Chocolate and toffee, some roasted malt and coffee notes in the flavor. Not much fruityness or hoppy bitterness here either. Watery mouthfeel. Roasted finish. Boring but drinkable. Session style, not by-the-fireplace style. (080517)
