Commercial Description:
Cask Special for JD Wetherspoons Autumn 2009 International Real Ale Festival. This dark, rich ale is a stronger version of this brewery’s award-winning Black Cat. It’s been brewed for the first time in several years especially for this JDW beer festival. The succulent aroma leads to a domination of chocolate on the palate, with notes of caramel, dark fruit and spicy hops also present. Hops used: Fuggles

Cask at the Standing ORder (JDW), Derby. Pitch black with thin tan head that laced the glass nicely; malty aroma with a hint of chocolate; velvety smooth in the mouth, with good chocolate malts, combining dry bitter chocolate with sweet malts; dry finish. A good strong mild.

Cask at Willow Walk, W’Spoons, Victoria. Dark pour with virtually no head whatsoever. Roasty, slightly hoppy, dark fruit. Rather thin and uninspiring, I didn’t finish it.

Cask handpull at The County Hotel, JDW, Ashford. One of the beers of the festival for me. Lovely choc beer, good roasted aroma. Excellent mouth feel. Good smooth finish with bit of roasted dryness. Good.

The Fleur-de-Lis, Banbury. Tar with a yellow-tan rim. Burnt toast aroma. Layered carbon and chewy dried fruit, cigar and cocoa linger, scatter of charred nuts. Big on taste, with a presence and roastiness more stout than mild in my book. Couldn’t ease the pain and ignominy of defeat by the mighty Puritans.

Cask at Bankers Draft (JDW), Bedford, after the end of the ’Spoons BF ’09. Near black with a small beige head. Leathery liquorice aroma. Sour milk taste, rough and tarry. Mid bitter finish. Brave festival offering from Moorhouse, which will probably not appeal to the passing punter.

Handpulled cask at JDW Harrow on the Hill. Almost black with a tan head. Malty with a slight winey sourness. Gentle hops lead to a well balanced finish. I prefere Black Cat to this one.

Cask, Lord Keeper of the Great Seal, Oadby. Black with a beige foam. Aromas are nutty with rich coffee and chocolate. Flavours are woody and smoky roast malts with some smokiness and dark treacle. Sweet chocolate with liquorice and dark chocolate bitterness. Some herbal notes. Quite rich.

JDW Rochester. Smokey and with a pleasant bitter tang in the finish. Solid beer - well done and tasty.

Cask conditioned at a Wetherspoons. Black with tan head. Sweet chocolate notes from the off, malty with a berry fruity note, tongue coating and clinging, I was hoping for more from this.
