Commercial Description:
Dark golden- brown hue. Pours with a foamy white head. Spicy aromas follow through on a medium-bodied palate with a creamy mouthfeel and dry, toasty finish showing a hint of hop character. An all natural dark beer which is brewed from an old recipe handed down from our ancestors. It’s fine filtered, spiced with the finest of hops and lavish malt. It has a full bodied aroma. Pours with a nice foam-like head.

Light copper. Large pearly white head establishes a fluffy halo as it quickly collapses. Overly sweet nose of honey-bathed biscuits (Munich), brown sugar, licorice, candied pecans and alcohol. Somewhat grapelike and medicinal. Loose, soft carbonic prickles. Initially metallic and limp with oversweet fuzzy malt, mashed overripe plums and a medicinal and dark grape twang. Underattenuated and flabby, throughout, with no snap whatsoever to disperse the sugary sweetness. Coarse herbal hop bitterness emerges late, but lacks definition and cleanness as it abrasively scrubs the tongue. Pervasive dullness and the lackluster malt extraction are compounded by the perceptible oxidation (cardboard). Closes flabbily and overly rich with soupy earthy grains and a high concentration of residual sugars. According the bottling date (Best before Sept. 2010), this is a fresh sample. This bottle is already oxidized, however. Not that oxidation makes it much worse as the beer is poorly made to begin with. Much more similar to a sloppy märzen than a kellerbier.

Bottle. Medium copper brown with a small head. Aromas are caramel, toffee and weetabix malts with evident grain. Lightly soapy with some treacle. Flavours are malty and sweet with hints of citrus. Yeasty with a fruity, dry finish. Decent.

Bottle from Total Wine in Roseville, CA. Pours a reddish copper with a decent white head. Aroma is lightly roast malt with something like citrus hop. Medium body with average carbonation. Flavor is malt, a little citrus, a little paper. Finishes lightly floral with hints of wood. Drinks very nicely.

500 ml swingtop bottle. Crystal clear light amber body has a thin white head that doesn’t last long and doesn’t lace well. Subdued aroma has some fruity esters, a hint of toasted caramel, and light spicy hops. Light body has a softly restrained carbonation. Taste has a bready maltiness that grows into a huskiness midway through. Toasted caramel notes work well with the lightly hopped spiciness. Clean and even, overall. An easy drinker that would make a nice session.

Bottle. Body is medium amber. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted grain/bread), lightly hoppy (herbs, flowers), with notes of DMS and honey. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately bitter, slightly unclean. Light to medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Meh...watery, thin, unclean.

Complete clear amber pour - not much of a head - a kind of bright, fruity character in the nose, along with herbal hops and light toffee - fairly clean and balanced flavor - flavors of toasted grains, toffee, fairly strong herbal bitterness, making way for a more dry, crackery malt character through the middle - fairly clean and tasty, but there is a metallic character and soapiness in the finish that kind of ruins things.

500 ml bottle. Pours a clear copper amber body with a one finger off-white head that left some light lacing. The nose is dry, dusty, and slightly husky malt with a light touch of light-roast coffee and burnt caramel. The flavor is dry slightly stale and husky toasted malt. Finishes with a little caramel and minimal balancing hops. Not especially flavorful. Medium bodied with a little limp clinginess on the finish. Nice soft light carbonation. Not the best, but worth a try I guess. Reminds me of Veldensteiner Landbier.

Clear, dark amber. Aroma has caramel, grains and cardboard. Flavor is very malty but again I get a stale cardboard.

Fairly dark amber pour with a thick head. There doesn’t really seem to be any suspended yeast in here… it’s crystal clear. The nose has a nice crackery character. Soft herbal hoppiness and a kiss of toffee with a lingering doughiness. There is a solid balance in here. It’s fairly clean, but there is a touch of a distracting metallic character. I like it, but it’s certainly not a great example.
