Commercial Description:
Dark golden- brown hue. Pours with a foamy white head. Spicy aromas follow through on a medium-bodied palate with a creamy mouthfeel and dry, toasty finish showing a hint of hop character. An all natural dark beer which is brewed from an old recipe handed down from our ancestors. It’s fine filtered, spiced with the finest of hops and lavish malt. It has a full bodied aroma. Pours with a nice foam-like head.

Bottle/swingtop. (re-rate purchased in Germany). Brown sugar and barley malt aroma. Medium brown color with nice head. Brown sugar/toffee and barley malt flavor with a moderate grassy hops/slightly metallic finish. Way better fresh (US purchase) Sour malt and molasses aroma. Medium brown with minimal head. Molasses malt flavor. This bottle was a bit past its prime but still nice especially given the rarity of this style in the states - had some dunkelbier characteristics. (6/3/6/3-12).

0.5L bottle, purchase relatively fresh from a new store that just opened. Pours a bright light-brown color; light tan head with solid retention and textured lacing. Pleasant aroma showing fruitiness, soft cloves, a bit of tea; very clean, crisp. Medium mouthfeel: lively carbonation; some zesty mineral bitterness at the front, with tea and red fruits and soft, bready malts at the core; excellent, crisp texture in the mouthfeel; I could drink a lot of this. Medium finish: lingering minerals, fruit, and minimal sugar. Just a nicely composed, intensely drinkable beer.

0.5 l, bb Sep-08. Clear, burnt orange with a 3 finger head that lasts well. Nose is spicy cherry, lemon-honey and grain. Sweet tastes of corn, honey, berries and cream are balanced nicely by some spicy hops. Very nice balance. I might have mistaken this beer for an excellent fruit beer in a blind tasting. Creamy smooth and nearly medium-bodied, has some nice tingle and a drying finish.

I don’t remember where I got this from since it sat in my cabinet for over a year. Maybe it was New Beer Distributors in NYC. Anyway, once you stir the fizz out of this beer, it’s quite nice. Not that bitter for a Kellerbier and with medium maltiness (richness). Bronze-colored. A tad sweet. If you’re like me and enjoy a sweet, thick beer, you’ll enjoy this one (once you de-fizz it).

Bottle 500 ml
Appearance: Clean dark amber with medium frisky top.
Nose : Fresh ,aromatic hops welcome you up front. Some caramel with refreshing clean malts. Little earthy tones at back touch zesty hops in nice way.
Flavor/Palate : Very soft , silky smooth with bit of stickiness. Good malt base , soft water helps as well. Slight roasty hints. Very clean and drinkable with neat zesty hop character.

28 sept 07. .5L swing-top bottle. 5.2%ABV. Rich ale looking, deep amber, with thin bubbly head. Aroma of candied fruit, lightly smoked malts. Flavor is very sweet, malted grains. Not much bitterness til late in the finish. Overall, smooth creamy texture and light-medium bodied. Kinda reminds me of a complex Märzen. Prost!

Rated 1/12/07: Swing top bottle poured a fairly clear rich amber/light brown color with a puffy off white head. Thick lacing slowly slides down the glass, there is a lazy carbonation. Initial stinging malt scent, comes off sweet and grassy, a bit musty and strong. A little sticky to the palate but medium bodied and pleasant. Bready with a good heaping of sweet malts are the dominant flavors, yeasty with a solid earthiness. Very pleasant and interesting, nothing I’d make a habit out of though.

Good beer. Got this bottle a couple a weeks ago at Sam’s in Chi. Poured with a light tan, foamy, frothy head and no lace. Head lasts a while. Color is a brownish dark amber. Aroma is toffee, malt, leather, a bit toasty, and a hint of hop. Flavor’s about the same. Smooth, mouth filling body with good carbonation. Easy drinking. Not over sweet malty finish. Session beer.
