Hingtop bottle at Rathskeller. Poured a hazy brown color with a large off-white fizzy head that was mostly lasting and produced fair lacing. Good banana and toasted malt aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Good sweet toast flavor with an average sweet finish of moderate duration. Soft drinkable brew.

500ml swingtop bottle. Aroma of musty yeast, sour dark malt. Fizzy off-white head that settles down to a skim with a bit of lacing. Flavor is watery and lively with carbonation, but shows some dark wheat malt, a bit of lemon and spice. Malt flavor is reminiscent of Newcastle brown ale. Light and refreshing but lacking in some areas. Flavor is good but much too light. I’m a fan of the style, but I was left wanting more. Seemed like what you might get if you mixed a good dunkleweizen, Newcastle, and Coors Light. Not really what I was looking for, but still decent enough.

Swingtop bottle labelled Schwarze Weisse. Clear brown body with a large frothy tan head. Sweet banana and spice aroma. Light banana flavor, somewhat nutty with a bit of yeastiness. Body is a bit too thin for my liking however.

The aroma is near spot on for a Dunkelweizen with coriander, bananas, sour wheat malt, and yeast. The appearance is medium red/brown with a good three finger head that didn’t last long enough. The flavor is like the aroma with a strong sour note up front. This is really the only bad thing about it but sadly it really hurts it. The palate is somewhat thin. Overall I am a little disappointed by this one.

(50cl bottle, labeled Schwarze Weisse, 5.0%, best by 3/07) Medium beige head atop a yeast-flecked copper/brown body. Aroma is medium sweet, nutty, some caramel, light earthy, lemon. Taste is moderately sweet, chocolate, some caramel, nut, cookie, light orange, lager yeast, faint earthy. Light-medium body.

swing top bottle - Pours dark brown with a medium-sized fizzy head. The aroma is yeasty with a touch of citrus. The flavor has the wheat, yeast, and not much else. It has a light flavor for a "dark" style and is a little thin. The palate is lively and the finish smooth. There’s just not much going on here.

From the ceramic-lidded swing top bottle, consumed right after the Weiss. this poured with a less-pronounced head, looking more like a regular dunkel bier than dunkelweiss. The aroma, too, is much more malty than yeasty ... with a big sweet cookieness to it. Likewise the flavor was like a sweet Girl Scout treat ... very sugary. Light and slippery, this was closer to a homebrewed soda than a dunkelweiss. (#2727, 2/25/2007)

Nice ruby red color with solid white foam and lacing. Hazy as all wheats but darker than expected. Good flavors and a nice undertone of banana esters showing through.
