beastiefan2k (1590), Lawrence (formely NYC), Kansas, USA Jun 13, 2009 Sampler @ the brewpub. It is black with a sticky tan lacing. Aroma is rich with chocolate and lots of coffee-like fumes. Almost a berry-like sweetness coming through as well. Taste is nicely dried out (the biggest impact of the barrel that I noticed) and a burst of bitter and rich chocolate at the end. Very flavorful and easy drinking (loving the medium abv as well). Its full of many different aspects that meld well together. Ughsmash (3978), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA May 29, 2009 On tap at the Wisconsin Micro-Brewer’s Beer Fest. Poured near black with a well-retained cap of tan head. The aroma picked up toasted chocolate, coffee, and oaky notes with vanilla accents.. nice! The flavor found burnt coffee and dark chocolate at the core with subtle earth and vanilla around.. dry peppery notes hit on the back.. tasty. Medium-bodied and dry on the palate with a scratchy feel.. OK balance.. solid brew. msante79 (778), Orland Hills, Illinois, USA May 5, 2009 On tap at brewpub. Pours very dark brown with tan head. Aroma is oak, roasted malt, chocolate and coffee. Flavor is oak, roasted malt, chocolate, vanilla and a little coffee. A little bland for a BA porter. Beer is not strong enough for the barrel. Decent brew. BDR (2139), Roseville, Minnesota, USA Mar 27, 2008 As usual, thanks to Skyview for sharing anything I try from Moosejaw. Mmmn.. Peat and oak in the aroma and fdlavor, with a faint coffee finish. Lots and lots of oak. JPDIPSO (4863), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA Feb 16, 2008 Dark brown color with a smaller bark beige, tight bubbled head. Lightly roasted malt, mild coffee, touch of oak and bits of chocolate and sorghum. Quite dry from the start with roasted malt, dark chocolate and hints of oak barrel. Mild black malt bitterness. This is the type of porter one could spend some time with. OSLO (825), Perth, Australia Nov 30, 2007 [Growler, thanks Skyview] Pours dark brown with a creamy dark head. Aroma is dominated by oak. Even after realizing it was going to be an oak-bomb from the aroma, the taste still took me by surprise. An intense blast of oak and coffee. Its not undrinkable, but wow, never have I tasted so much oak in a beer before. A slight bitterness was also present. Medium mouthfeel. Long finish. I’m glad I tried this, but I would only be able to drink it in small amounts. I now know what liquid oak tastes like. JK (2945), Richfield, Minnesota, USA Nov 29, 2007 From Skyview. A dry, malty porter. Thick, but fairly plain flavor without anything special. It does have moderate roasted malt, and a very good, heavy palate. Dry finish. badgerben (3584), Blaine, Minnesota, USA Nov 28, 2007 Another growler courtesy of, guess who? Skyview! Dark brown color with a thin head. A light aroma of oak. Taste is of chocolate and coffee, with a slightly bitter malt tang a very small bit of vanilla. Quite nice.
