Commercial Description:
This style originated in San Francisco, California when a brewer used cold fermenting lager yeast at warmer ale temperatures. The result is a slightly spicy note on top of a crisp, lighter lager. One of our biggest sellers!

(On tap, named Steam Lager) This beer seems subdued upon first sip, smooth for a second, but quickly the hops kick in and you realize that it is more like an American pale ale than a typical (blander) "steam beer". The hops are very fresh and cool tasting, and the malt is fairly complex and blends and balances extremely well with the hops. This is one of the better beers to come out of Morgan street brewing. I wish they made more beers like this because I think this beer is not only well-executed, but unique and has character and complexity. It’s also largely without objectionable qualities, although perhaps it is a bit flat, like most of Morgan street’s brews. I would recommend this one for anyone who likes American pale ales and more bitter beers.

On tap at the Parkville Microbrew Festival. This is a very well-balanced beer and just a pleasure to drink. A dark gold pour with a ginormous white head. This tastes like a steam beer. Has a goodmalt graininess, but ends up being surprisingly smooth to drink. Great finishing lacing.

Sample #3 from the brew pub. Golden amber. Off white Saturn head. Medium malt caramel nose. Smooth. Little soapy. Nice citrus hop finish. Floral. Medium bodied. Malty and a little bitter. Solid. Best of Show!

tap at augusta bottoms beerfest alongside vyvvy. My #2 beer for the event. light copper hue with a soapy white head. nose is spicy with some nicely toasted malts. smells crisp and fresh with no off-notes. nice balanced between toasted malt grains and spicy hops. like their pils, but with a more robust malt presence. hoppy finish which was definately cool for the style. good session beer.

Sampled at Augusta Bottoms Beer Festival 2006. Poured light copper with a light tan head that is small but dense. the aroma has light toasted pale malt, earthy hops and a bit of spice. Medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation. Taste started with toasted smooth malt with spicy bold hops. The finish has more hops and huskiness from the malt comes out. Nicely done CA common.

If you like tart hops in a beer this one is for you. Hops dominated and bitterness followed up. There was no sweetness to be found at all.
