Commercial Description:
The first lager ever done at the Mountain Sun, this doppelbock took a gold at the 1998, 1999, and 2000 GABF, as well as a silver medal at the 2000 world beer cup. Made with eight different malts, this full-bodied lager, which has aged for over six months, will make you wish that this beer was available year round. Keep an eye out because this lager makes its appearance only twice a year.

Pours a light color for a dobbelbock and smells of an incredible boquet of well balanced hoppy bitterness to the sweet hues of the double malty strength. A warming taste comes over the perfectly sweetend and incredble nutty fruit blend. The best dobbelbock I’ve tried.

Had this on tap at the brewery. "Doppelbock please" -- If I hadn't watched him pull it from the tap I would have thought there was some kind of mistake. Maybe it was the smells of the unwashed not-so-covered-up with patchouli swirling all around me but damned if I didn't get a glass of cloudy, muddy-looking beer that was WAY over the top alcoholic and PHENOLIC! A Lager? Jeez this stuff needs work.

GABF 2003: Orange/ruby clear color, with a good sized off-white head. Earthy, smokey aroma, with a thick mouthfeel. Ends full and a bit sweet.

Dark, murky brown with a thin head. Thick and chewy on the palate; just a little cloying. Mild carbonation. Strong sweetness is unbalanced against the mild hops (it's only very mildly bitter and zingy). Has somewhat of a nuttiness about it. Alcohol is barely noticeable. Malts seemed a bit green.

Draught. Body is medium orange-brown. Aroma is moderately malty (caramel, toasted dark bread, nutty), with notes of toffee and smoke, hint of alcohol. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Medium body, watery texture, soft carbonation, lightly alcoholic. I'd prefer to see more hop/bitter development in the finish to balance the malt, but it's quite pleasant.
