Commercial Description:
This strong Moylan's brew is what keeps those Irish eyes a smiling. Its deep amber radiance has been described by our brewer as the most visually enticing beer. This ale's rich malty flavor, full body, invigorating aroma, and expansive finish empower it to be extremely satisfying and repeatedly enjoyed. Great Western Two Row Pale Malt, De Wolf-Cosyns' Caravienne and Munich Malts are allied to provide the 1.070 beginning specific gravity, while Fuggle and Liberty hops balance this sweetness. A classic rich and malty ale from Ireland. Unlike most "want-to-be" red ales, Moylan's red has a rich caramel character balanced with a low hop profile.

22 oz. bottle $4.95 from Spirit Haus Amherst, MA: Pours an orange-reddish hue. Small sticky off white/orangeish head. Sweet grainy, vegetal, somewhat unpleasant baked bean nose. Sweet, caramel/toffee, nutty, wood, roasty grain, light to medium bodied, moderate carbonation, sweet sweet and sourish. Bitter, citric, dirty foot, stinky hops. Maybe we should revise the style, or maybe get rid of it...

Disclaimer: I’m generally not a fan of reds, but figured that if anyone could make one that appeals to me, Moylan would be the one. Expectations were not fully satisfied however. Poured dark red with a nice fluffy head. Mouth had much more of a tart note than I expected, while not entirely unpleasant, it was enough to make me not want to finish the glass. Too bad that IMHO this was not up to the high standards of his other brews.

Was not expecting the tart notes out of this one, in fact there were no real flavors that I expected, I would not choose this to be representative of the style.

Pours a medium copper color, with a medium offwhite head. Aroma of malt, yeast, and maybe some dark fruits.

Bottle, from Julio’s. Ok nose, sweet. Malty, nutty, yeasty, caramel. Clean brownish orange color, good head that slowly reduced to a ring. Minor lacing. Bitter sweet flavor. Caramel, little bitter, lite fruity grape thing. Medium body, lite watery mouthfeel, mild bitterness on the finish. Tasty for an Irish red, had a similiar taste as the Kilt tilter, just milder.

(Draft. 03/2006). This was a tasty brew. Malty aromas, particularly from colored malts, with notes of caramel and toffee. No hop aroma. Deep, clear, red. No head. Deep, caramelly flavors and notes of toffee, again. Malty. Medium-full palate and a bit sticky.

This is a dark amber brew with a nice thick layer of creamy head.Nose wasn’t much, some malts maybe but nothing stood out here in the aroma or flavor.

22oz bottle. Hazy red brown and orange. Medium sized offwhite head. Earthen musty smells with caramel and slight toastiness. Dusty, oxidized flavors with burnt caramel and faint toasted malt. Butterscotch finish. Mouthfeel is medium and pretty creamy.
