Commercial Description:
This strong Moylan's brew is what keeps those Irish eyes a smiling. Its deep amber radiance has been described by our brewer as the most visually enticing beer. This ale's rich malty flavor, full body, invigorating aroma, and expansive finish empower it to be extremely satisfying and repeatedly enjoyed. Great Western Two Row Pale Malt, De Wolf-Cosyns' Caravienne and Munich Malts are allied to provide the 1.070 beginning specific gravity, while Fuggle and Liberty hops balance this sweetness. A classic rich and malty ale from Ireland. Unlike most "want-to-be" red ales, Moylan's red has a rich caramel character balanced with a low hop profile.

pours a hazy amber-orange with a thin tan head. Aroma is biscuity malt, light buttered toast and caramel tones. Flavour is medium toasted malt, caramel, some grainyness going on. The fruity hop tones are very subtle and barely noticable for me. Pretty clean finish with a light lingering fruity hop.

Pours a clear orange-red Aroma is butter and sweet plum. Taste is very odd - more plum, peach, lots of butter, malty with pretty much nothing in the way of hops. Smooth but ultimately thin, moderate carbonation. Irish Red is a quirky style I’m usually pretty fond of, but this was a let-down. While I’m all for experimentation, Caravienne and Munich malts are not, perhaps, what I would use for a traditional Irish style beer. I was expecting a touch of roasted grains.

Bottle. Surprised by light chocolate on the nose. Light amber color, nice lacing and light carbonation. Flavor not as pleasant as the aroma. Medium body and malt and barley take the center. Not many hops detectable here. Earthy, grainy, smooth and simple. Not as impressive as several other brews I’ve had from this brewery but still deserves a decent rating in my opinion.

Dark amber pour with a foamy head that fades quickly. Aroma of light fruit, grain and caramel malt. Flavors of the same, very grainy and sweet. Malt really comes through, but almost no hop presence. Medium bodied, slightly undercarbonated. Just okay.

Excerpted from my review at cvillebeergeek.blogspot.com....

Appearance: A very subtly hazed dark tinged orange color. A moderate pour produced a very small head. Moderate head retention and little specks of lacing. 3.5/5.0

Aroma: The aroma is pleasant, a slightly earthy graininess with a caramel tinge. But, the beer loses points because even after agitation, the aroma is very faint. 2.5/5.0

Taste: Interesting, in a bad way. Very earthy and grainy taste. There is a surprising creaminess, some caramel notes and an off-putting vegetal note. It’s not quite rotting broccoli, but it gets close. A caramel sweetness grows as the beer warms and the whole thing doesn’t quite achieve balance. 2.0/5.0

Mouthfeel: Despite the creamy taste, this is a little too thin. Slightly tart, the carbonation starts off average and quickly falls flat. 2.0/5.0

Drinkability: I don’t find this to be a pleasant experience, and finishing the 22 oz. bottle comes across as a chore. At 6.5%, the drinking quickly to minimize the taste trick can be risky. 2.0/5.0

Overall: Ironic! The beer I rated because my first bottle of this hit the ground ends up being rated better! That’s macro beer for you. Nothing offputting and inoffensive. Even though Moylan’s is a craft brewery and definitely turns out some great beers, this is not one of them. 2.35/5.0

Clear brown pour with a red tint. Thin bubbly head. Slight chocolate cocoa aroma, yeasty with a touch of bourbon and oak. There was a little bit of an unpleasant pungent aroma present. Intense chocolate pudding flavor. Bitter roast aftertaste with some cream. Slight bit of skunkiness to it. Not bad.

Wow this was a very different ale. Very different. It was intensely grainy but not bready or yeasty at all. It tasted like your throat would taste had you stuck your nose in a bag of golden crisps after the cereal was gone and snorted the left over fuzzy crumbs. Very different beer, and its always nice to try one that really strays from the norm, so I give this one some extra points.
