arondee (173), Tucson, Arizona, USA Aug 16, 2008 Oh my God it’s so bitter. I love a good IPA, it’s all I ever drink. This is so freaking bitter it’s not even right. It actually gets better as you drink it. The first sip is pretty shocking as is the second. By the third or fourth drink it starts getting better and better. I’ll finish this bottle but I can’t drink more than one of these in a night. NomDeBeer (397), Maryland, USA Aug 14, 2008 Possibly the hoppiest and most abrasively bitter beer I’ve ever had - and I mean that in the best way possible.
To hell with malt flavors and balance, this is nirvana for hop heads. Lemons, grapefruits, and grass for flavor along with a strong metallic bitterness on the back of my tongue. Definitely one of my favorite IPA’s. shigadeyo (2210), Harrison, Ohio, USA Aug 14, 2008 2007 Vintage
8/14/2008: This bottle of Moylan’s Hopsickle Imperial Triple Hoppy Ale has about a year of age on it, but it still manages to deliver quite a blast of hop flavor and bitterness. Sweet, candied citrus (orange and grapefruit) peel and quite a bit of caramel maltiness mend into a big juicy aroma. The beer has an opaque orange color with a creamy and frothy ivory-colored head on top that creates good lacing on the glass. The flavor delivers a hefty dose of instant citrus bitterness across the entire tongue followed by a nice creamy caramel maltiness and then more substaintial bitterness. The bitterness level is somewhere between high and even higher. However, it somehow still seems balanced due to the hefty maltiness. My guess is that some of the really fresh and juiciness of the hops have faded a bit, but there is still a lot of orange, grapefruit, citrus peel flavor to it along with some floral and resin qualities. It is still more IIPA than Barleywine. Regardless, this beer does not disappoint. It delivers the flavor, the hoppiness, the bitterness, and the alcohol all wrapped up into a medium-full body that glides smoothly over the palate. I personally like this beer with a bit of age on it as I find it overly bitter and more of an enamal stripper when it is really fresh (although sometimes that does hit the spot!)...
1 pt. 6 fl. oz. bottle (Alcohol 9.2% by Volume; $5.99+tax) from River’s Bend Wine and Spirits in Maineville, Ohio. Rating #543 for this beer...
TwoDudes (77), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Aug 14, 2008 Updated: Oct 1, 2008No. I love hops as much as the next guy, but this was insane. No balance at all. Just astringent, bitter hops. Needs some balance. Their double IPA is a far superior beer.
Re-Rate: Man, this second bottle was what I was expecting in the first place. HUGE hops, but this time seemed a lot more balanced. Still uber-hoppy, but the malt played a bigger role in the beer. Much, much better. grandridge (222), Port Clinton, Ohio, USA Aug 12, 2008 This is the hoppiest out there but not the best. Pours golden brown with some sediment. Hops are overwhelming in the aroma. flavor is hops, bitterness, and more hops. This is a hop bomb. This is good, ut wouldn’t want to drink it on a regular basis. Give me Elder, Dreadnaught, and Hopslam DrDogbeer (6), weymouth, Massachusetts, USA does not count Aug 11, 2008 Pours a very hazy orange with a good size white head. Very floral aroma with a good deal of citrus too. Pretty heavy on the nose.
Tastes similar- lots of hop bite up front- grapefruit mostly and some grassy flavor too. Nice finish - sweet with a bit of candy flavor malt to finish. Very fgood DIPA- which I have had a bunch of lately. I like the aroma and the fact it is not too malty- yet not just a hop bomb either.
mabel (2530), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 4, 2008 [1287-20080411] 1pt6floz bottle. Super citrus grainy hops aroma. Slightly hazy, amber orange body with a quick off-white head. Bitter woodsy logs seeped in aged grapefruit sap. Bitter bitter medium-full body. Wow! Hoppy.
(c/o DuctTape, w/ him, jerc) Tejas (693), Dallas, Texas, USA Aug 4, 2008 Super hoppy. Not for the faint of heart. Good fresh flavor. 9.2% Alcohol isn’t noticeable at all. Very smooth for such a big sucker.
