| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 3, 2009 Enjoyed from a 12oz bottle in a pub glass. The beer pours a deep copper to medium brown color, with a slightly off-white head. Strong aromas of English crystal malts come through in the nose, as does what seems like some Munich malt. Hops don’t really make themselves known in the nose, nor in the palate. The latter is full in the mouth, giving a really nice level of malt complexity. The finish is slightly sweet, but not cloying. Alcohol is not detectable at any point. Overall, a well-crafted and well-designed beer. amp811 (38), Charleston, South Carolina, USA

It’s not quite as good as the Smuttynose Scotch, but it can certainly satisfy that need for a truly malty, sweet, slightly smoky Scotch Ale. It actually feels somewhere between a Brown and a Scotch, and I love it. IlanMan (820), Appleton, Wisconsin, USA

Aroma was of light caramel, toffee, toast, and sweet malt. Flavors were rich and malty with a body that was smooth and medium-light. Good blend of aromas and flavors. Good brew. topherh (936), Kearney, Missouri, USA

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jun 13, 2009 I bought this on a whim, and didn’t really know what to expect. It looks pretty nice in the glass with a red amber color and a small beige head. It has a nice tart aroma of yogurt, caramel, and grainy malts. The taste is way hoppier than I expected with notes of grapefruit, caramel, toffee, and fig. I would have liked a little richer, sweeter malt flavor, but overall not bad. Not something I’ll be jonesing for again anytime soon. craftbeerdesign (755), Alpharetta, Georgia, USA

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jun 11, 2009 On tap at the Flying Saucer in KC. Pours a crystal clear, ruby amber body with a dense, finger-width, brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves lots of creamy lacing. Aroma of scotch, sweet bready caramels, big raisins, and a light chocolate plum. Flavor is sweet and malty. Really nice and not muted like some scotch ales. Starts with very sweet caramel and raisin before a smooth chocolate comes in. Some scotch flavor also introduces itself and glides into the finish with plenty of caramel and raisin. Bready with lots of fruitcake flavors. Finishes with a bit of pepper in the scotch with lingering fruit, caramel, and chocolate. Medium to full body and very smooth with a long lingering taste after a slow drying finish. Overall, surprisingly tasty. I normally don’t think too highly of scotch ales, but this was pretty good. Nice body and balance. I really like the scotch flavor in this a lot. Pronounced, but accompanied by enough other flavors very well. Underrated!
