Lots of sweet caramel malt up front, followed by chewy bread and stale/musty hops. Deep whif and you get some alcohol tinge. Flavor has tons of sweet malt, all caramel with some residuel sugar and musty hops again. Slight alcohol burn in the finish. Volgon (2490), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA

Older editions mellow nicely, the burn is gone, hops soften considerably, fully body and far less carbonation. I would say wait about three years before drinking. The minority opinion around the table was that this beer has a "green pea" aroma. I, however, did not detect such a silly thing. This barleywine is very sweet- almost molasses-like. pmbigger (6), Lexington, Kentucky, USA does not count | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Nov 12, 2005 Smells real sweet, then tastes real sweet. Tastes more like an imperial stout than a barley wine. Could use a bunch more hops, though the pretty decent amount of sediment makes me think its dry hopped raw. auto (161), California, USA

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 16, 2005 Bottle: Great malty aroma. Lots of chocolate, caramel, banana bread, vanilla, and the slightest hints of citrus hops. Pours a transparent reddish-brown with an off-white head. Flavor is almost all malt. Lots of chocolate and caramel in the taste. A hint of sugary sweetness in the background. Hops in the finish are very subdued and gives it an aged-like character (which I don’t believe it is). fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Oct 5, 2005 Bottle. Much more carbonated than I have come to expect from a Barley Wine. Very Malty aromas, and heavy malt and alcohol on the flavor. Just like a good Barley Wine should be. Excellent example of the style. I enjoyed this a lot.
