Aroma is a nice mix of hops and dark chocolate aromas with some subtler fruity aromas mixed in. Body is flat black and holds a creamy mocha colored head that is thumb thick and diminishes slowly. Lace clings to the glass. Fore is bittersweet chocolate with very lucious dark cherry notes in the middle. Finishes with a roasty bitterness that reminds me of a scaled down version of Gonzo Imperial Porter. I figured this would be decent, but it’s actually very damn good. Definitely more aggresively hopped than most porters. That works well here and amplifies the latent coffee notes in the aftertaste. Tastes much bigger than you’d expect from a 6% abv beer. Excellent porter! kenb (1100), Oregon, USA

Chilled for 1 1/4 hrs.Pours a midnight black with a small tan head. Nice roasty aroma with notes of vanilla, chocolate and espresso. Starts out sweet and finishes with bittersweet roasted cocoa/coffee. Almost chewy. Full bodied for a Porter. Borders on Baltic porter/imp Stout terrirtory but with less abv. This is my 2nd Mt. Shasta beer and i like them both. Their Abner Ale is going to be a staple, and this will now be my #1 go-to session Porter. Session? OMG this is one of the best beers i have ever tasted, session or no..Easily as good as a $10 import...Am SO glad to have found this brewery! kramer (2465), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Jul 29, 2006 12 oz bottle, via Dubbercody. Pours a very dark brown, clear, under a foamy tight bubbled dark brown head with decent retention. Heavy chocolate malt aroma, almost fudgecake like, with a lighter roasted note. Some coffee and light yeast notes as well. The flavor has quite a bit of roast for a Porter, but the chocolate malt is there in force as well. A nice balancing bitterness ties it all together. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with very fine prickly carbonation. This was a really great surprise, a full flavored well rounded Porter. Worth seeking out. MartinT (5050), Montreal, Quebec, Canada
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 2, 2006 Any first impressions?
-Ample foam and lacing atop opaque darkness.
-Chocolatey sweetness benefits from a roasted malt contour, building a solid yet self-effacing aroma.
-Milk chocolate and molasses abound, straightforward and humble.
-A chewy, round mouthfeel provides sufficient nutritional value in the form of biteable maltiness.
What if you dig deeper?
-A delicate roastiness follows the malty sweetness.
-Did I imagine these faint hops in the finish?
-Sweetness evolves into a subtle licorice/star anise component towards the end.
-A nourishing, well-crafted porter for meditative sessions.

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Apr 3, 2006 True they brew a "test positive" stout? Was wondering if this would be more good or gimmick and pleased to say that I enjoyed it - nice full body, leaning to sweet side with some molasses like flavor along w/ the roast character and nice bitterness. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Mar 21, 2006 (12 oz bottle: Mt. Shasta Brewing Co. in Weed, CA) Bought this bottle when I visited the brewery seven months ago, and unfortunately, Shastafarian wasn’t pouring that day so all I can go on is the bottled version they gave me. Mt. Shasta has a very obvious signature flavor to all their beers: a very sweet and caramely maltiness. While this porter is moderately sweet, it’s nothing compared to most of their other brews. At least here, the sweetness is balanced by an ashy, bitter, dark roast. A bit of chocolate shows up toward the finish and the beer has a modest yeastiness to it as well. Medium-full body, well-carbonated but still quite creamy and smooth on the palate. Yeasty, lightly roasty nose is less appealing than the flavor. Very dark brown in color, nearly black. Big, energetic head is medium tan in color and very long-lasting, maintaining at least a quarter inch cap for the entire session. Possibly the best beer made at Mt. Shasta because of the balance it exhibits. Not great, but still quite nice. Oakes (8081), gone rambling, Vietnam
