Shasta Brewing Co. in Weed, CA) Bought this bottle when I visited the brewery seven months ago, and unfortunately, Shastafarian wasn’t pouring that day so all I can go on is the bottled version they gave me. Mt. Shasta has a very obvious signature flavor to all their beers: a very sweet and caramely maltiness. While this porter is moderately sweet, it’s nothing compared to most of their other brews. At least here, the sweetness is balanced by an ashy, bitter, dark roast. A bit of chocolate shows up toward the finish and the beer has a modest yeastiness to it as well. Medium-full body, well-carbonated but still quite creamy and smooth on the palate. Yeasty, lightly roasty nose is less appealing than the flavor. Very dark brown in color, nearly black. Big, energetic head is medium tan in color and very long-lasting, maintaining at least a quarter inch cap for the entire session. Possibly the best beer made at Mt. Shasta because of the balance it exhibits. Not great, but still quite nice. dwyerpg (2537), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

First rate: 4.5 Aroma is really nice, coffee and hops and toasted malts. A little hoppy bite in the finish. A quite nice pleasant porter. OhioDad (2491), Hilliard, Ohio, USA

Aromas of roasted malts, coffee, and a bit of coffee. Good coffee and roasted malt flavor dominate but there is some sweet chocolate there too. Thick rich and robust good carbonation and a creamy mouthfeel. This is a very good porter!! Fantastic! kmweaver (2471), Sebastopol, California, USA

Really surprised to see this on the shelf! Sitting down with a whole bottle of this, this really reminds me a lot of General Lafayette’s Chocolate Thunder Porter, with that dense, nougat and chocolate core that coats the palate without overwhelming it; nicely toasty throughout; slightly lax aroma of basic chocolate and caramel notes; this really shines in the mouth: velvety, perfectly presented mouthfeel of dense chocolate and nougat and marshmallow notes; just an impressively tasty, generous, nicely presented porter; a nice beer. Lengthy finish of bitter chocolate, coffee, and that same fine balance of light bitterness and complex malt character.

12oz bottle, courtesy of Schutzenliesel. Thanks, Tom! Pours a hazy, dark chocolate brown color; thin light-tan head with patchy lacing. Lots of nougat, raw peanuts, and some funky, chocolatey cardboard; odd. Medium mouthfeel: chewy nougat, bitter chocolate, and oily peanuts; relaxed carbonation; oily, filling and pleasant overall; tasty save for the nose. Medium finish: dry, toasty malts, and dark chocolate. 6.3.7.4.14=3.4 kramer (2465), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA

Pours a very dark brown, clear, under a foamy tight bubbled dark brown head with decent retention. Heavy chocolate malt aroma, almost fudgecake like, with a lighter roasted note. Some coffee and light yeast notes as well. The flavor has quite a bit of roast for a Porter, but the chocolate malt is there in force as well. A nice balancing bitterness ties it all together. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with very fine prickly carbonation. This was a really great surprise, a full flavored well rounded Porter. Worth seeking out. 5000 (2429), Hardened Liver, Washington, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 29, 2005 Bottle: Dark brown, lighter on the edges, moderate light brown foamy head, nice lacing, looks tasty. Cocoa and appleskin nose, fairly sweet, slight lactose. Smooth roasted malt profile, definitely sweet, emergence of cocoa and light fruitiness at the finish. Definitely a sweeter example of the style. Finishes with a bit of a hop twang and moreso of the roasted malt flavor thats to be expected for the style. Fairly big body but moderate mouthfeel. Tasty, but maybe turn down the sweetness a bit, up the hop factor, and it’d be tastier. Thanks Bill!
