Commercial Description:
Mudgee Wheat is a traditional European-style beer, brewed using lots of wheat malt. It also uses Bavarian yeast, which gives the beer its cloudy appearance, and its distinctive aromas of clove and banana. This beer goes down very easily and is absolutely packed to the rafters with flavour. Brewing wheat beers is actually one of the more difficult brewing styles, but the creamy texture and spicy overtones of Mudgee Wheat are always worth the trouble.

Bottle. Sort of an odd one. Had a more hoppy pilsenery feel, but then the thick texture and banana lolly taste reminded me it was a wheat beer. Good maltiness, and goes down well with a cheese plate.

I thought this was an American Style Wheat when I first tried it because mine was almost completely devoid of cloves/banana. It definitely had the sourness I’d expect but too dry to balance it out properly. Head was good and hung around a little while. Mellowed a little after a while but the tartness was just a little too much for me.

Aroma: some funk with a hint of clove. Flavour: actually a decent mix of a little banana with clove and sweet malt.

Draught, Lawson Park Hotel, Mudgee. Dropped by on the way to Orange from the upper Hunter. Hazy pale golden body, fluffy white head. Decidedly sweet aroma, candy banana, bubble gum, wheat malt and clove. Creamy mouthfeel, high carbonation, seems somehow lean. Quite nice flavour, bubblegum seems more apparent than in most, bit of banana and spice on the finish. Quite nice for an Aussie micro hefe.

opened it with trepidation after the other two mudgee beers gushed all over me... but a healthy psscht and no more. however head fizzled immediately, which is a grave flaw in my book. smells like a proper weissbier yeast used, but along with cloves and perfume and bubblegum there’s also a bit of a dirty fruity stressed yeast smell. in the mouth plenty of wheat malty flavour and good phenolic aftertaste, but definitely on the sweet side. but a pretty good effort, beats a lot of aussie hefes.

Good to have a brewery to provide some competition for all the winemakers in the Mudgee region. The brewery has three beers in bottles - a wheat, golden ale and a porter - and a fourth, an APA called Spring, which was served on draught at the recent beef festival at Sydney’s Australian Hotel. This seemed to be a pretty fair hefe by local standards. Not a world beater, but pretty well made. Murky lemony colour with just enough suds for the style. Classic European wit aroma that screamed wheat malt. Quite dry, with the familiar banana notes. Soft mouthfeel. Tastes of Weetbox and hot milk, with a few banana candies thrown in. Simple and clean. No obvious off-notes but it felt like it needs a bit more body. (Draught at the Australian Hotel beerfest 07)
