[on tap at Holiday Inn, Portsmouth] Used to love this when I was young but you don’t seem to see it very often in pubs nowadays. Near black with brown hints; large creamy beige head; no carbonation. Smells of cocoa. Taste is milk chocolate and roasted malt, with a wonderfully thick, creamy finish. Just the faintest hint of metals from the pasteurisation spoils it a little, but this is much less evident than in other keg beers. Maybe the flavour isn’t quite as strong as Guinness, but the mouthfeel is so much better - this is heavenly to drink and slips down a treat. A gem amongst keg beers.

This takes me back to my younger days. I was abig Guinness drinker, some freinds had been to Europe who told me about a stout like Guinness but even tastier. When I finally got my hands on my own glass of it I drank it all in one drink. Anyway on to the rating! This stuff smells like a freaking chocolate malt, if it were made with dark chocolate, just a very attractive aroma. It looks great too with a nice deep almost black colour and a large frothy head that sticks around to the bottom of the glass leaving lots of lace on the way down. The flavor is a little bit nuttier and roastier than a Guinness the sweetness is fairly well controlled and although it gives little in the way of hops, this seems to fit the palate well. This is fairly creamy, but a bit watery as well.

16oz can. Pours a thick, tan head with a dark brown body. Smells of toast and burnt sugar. Tastes of coffee, caramel, and toast. Creamy finish that is slightly bitter.

Tap at Hole in the Wall, A’dam. A dark beer with a hoppy, almost like bread, taste to it. Good stout.

[1765-20081004] Tap. Lots of coffee roast in the aroma. Black body with red highlights has a long-lasting creamy tan head and lovely cascading down the sides of the glass when you tip it. Heavy roasted malt flavour has all low notes and lots of bitter coffee. Full body. Nice brew, could be smoother but looks beautiful. (7/5/7/3/15) 3.7

[1851C-20081103] Tap. Fruity plum and roasty malt grains aroma. Dark brown black body with a thick creamy light tan head and wave-action cascading down the sides. Initially bitter roast malt flavour followed quickly by a roasted fruit plum. Full body is a little watery. Could be thicker, not bad. (7/5/6/3/13) 3.4

To me, this and Guinness are nearly dead even. But this one’s creamier and a little more coffee/chocolate like.

Not a lot going on here. I got nostalgic the other day and thought I would try this again. Very light aroma and the flavor is weak roasted malt and light coffee. It was better than this 10 years ago.

Draught in the Celtic Corner, Dartmouth N.S. great look top this stout. Creamy white head. Not much aroma. Not much flavour. Sadly another beer that has gone down hill since being brewed by InBev UK. It used to be good. Not any more. Shame.
